Dear Greenpeace,
I guess it is very difficult to collect information about the nuclear situation in Japan, but your are one of the most important organisation fighting against this form of energy and a lot of people trust you. This is way, at this day, I would expect to find on your website a more complete picture on the nuclear disaster in Japan, without too much fragmentation. We really need reliable information on it and you are among the few independent organisations that can offered it.

Can you tell us more about the evacuation procedure and how this disaster is effecting neighbouring countries? What should people do to be less exposed? Where is it most save? There's some reports talking about the rain being contaminated as far as the Americas...warning to use umbrellas and not let the water touch your skin...can your expert tell us more. Thank you Greenpeace for all your hard work. My prayers are with the people of Japan and the workers who are risking their lives to fix the situation. I hope this tragedy will prove that there is no space for nuclear energy in this world. This is terrible.

The next few days are going to be very consequential regarding the future of the nuclear energy.

If the Japanese reactors, currently in trouble, survive the scenario currently unfolding, then the nuclear industry is going to argue that the technology was robust enough to survive even this 'perfect storm' of disasters. By survival, I mean that the leakage of radioactivity remains at reasonable levels as they are now with no short term or long term consequences to human health.

If there is a significant leakage, then the nuclear industry is doomed but the industry is going to fight back anyway by putting forth arguments such as the japanese reactors were old and they had taken risks with storing 'spent fuel' in large quantities near the reactors etc. etc. or that the Japanese case is extraordinary because of its particularly risky geology. Of course, these arguments will be hard to swallow for counter arguments can then be made that if a rich country (and so technologically advanced and prepared a nation) such as japan can suffer these issues, then most of the rest of the world is even at a greater risk (not only from natural disasters but also from conflicts etc.) .

Also note that if the nuclear energy industry is scaled back significantly, coal-fired power plants are going to become even more ubiquitous and that is not something one should be hoping for.

Perhaps the best scenario we can hope for is that the japanese public itself forces the japanese government to give up on nuclear energy because after Hiroshima and Nagasaki and now this, an anti-nuclear movement coming out of Japan will be like no other.

The nuclear industry is going to fight back, have no doubt! Too many jobs and university departments depend on it remaining viable.

Also note that the 'west' should not get too loud crticizing the nuclear industry with respect to the disaster unfolding at japan for that is going to drive many of the japanese people, who are sure to become anti-nuclear, pro-nuclear just to not be seen siding with those voices from the west. The west is already making a mockery of itself by fleeing cities such as Tokyo in hordes at a time when all the resources should be being used to help the victims of the quake and the tsunami.

Japan is not a particularly greenpeace-friendly country. So, it better tread very carefully in these waters. Good Luck!
