The only thing they say they are changing is their policy about being secretive about what they are doing. The letter says they are going to be more open about what they are doing. They aren't changing *what* they are doing just how they announce it. I failed to see what kind of win this is for Greenpeace. In fact when reading the Greenpeace response it looks like whoever wrote it doesn't have basic reading comprehension skills. You might want to read Apple's message again.

James, we've been talking to Apple directly for two years now, and while your misreading of the message is understandable, it's wrong. This is exactly what it says on the tin: a new Greener Apple. Not entirely Green, but greener. And you'll note that Greenpeace isn't mentioned by name anywhere in the note: he's responding to pressure from Apple shareholders, customers, and employees. That's who owns the credit for this one, and that's the force we knew all along Apple would listen to.

Congratulations. A spot on campaign, which used brand and personal pressure.

James response doesn't like a "misreading" at all to me, Brian. In fact I think it is spot on the money. The only real "change" is that Apple have decided to tell us all a little more about what they doing (which, in reality, has been more than most other computer manufacturers for many years). The only "victory" here , at the end of an often misleading and mischevious campaign, is that Greenpeace will hopefully no longer feel obliged to sink harpoons into one of the more responsible operators in this area, and can hopefully start focusing again on real issues. By baseing your campaign on misguided interpretations of companies future promises and questionable product reseach, while ignoring a host of other factors such as energy usage, product longevity and real, existing achievements in reductyion of toxic materials I suspect you have added to the world's environmental problems, not reduced them. How many megatons of lead are going to end up in landfill as result of people buying a computer with a crt monitor from another manufacturer because they were put off getting an Apple with an lcd screen, for example? How much more greenhouse gas has been produced because people have bought other brands with significantly higher energy requirements? How much more PVC packaging is out there because you simply ignored the fact that other major computer makers continue to use something that Apple had got rid of over a decade ago? Greenpeace shouldn't be patting itself on the back over this one. It should instead be thinking long and hard about how it is going to better target the vast array of real issues that confront us all.

The greenpeace artikle say that apple only takes back hardware in the us.. But 40% of the hardware is sold outside of the US. Apple claims thy take back hardware in the top 83% so there is a 23 % discrepancy. Apple must also take back in other coun tries to get those numbers. Apple started recycling in 1994 and today we operate recycling programs in countries where more than 82% of all Macs and iPods are sold. By the end of this year, that figure will increase to 93%. How successful are these programs?

Rod, As I just responded to you by email, this is a significant step forward. Transparency and openness in their policy certainly a good thing for starters. And I do not see any sense in you CRT statement. No one is advocating that people buy CRTs. Who is even saying not to buy Apple? It's just that a lot of Apple fans want to buy greener Apples and finally its seems Apple is starting to listen.

Mats - On take back - Apple's (outside the US) major sales currently are in Europe. In most of Europe all electronic manufactures are legally required to take back their products. Hence this where the probably where 'missing' figures are. But in the UK for example (major Apple market) where Apple is not legally required to take back it doesn't: http://www.apple.com/environment/recycling/nationalservices/europe.html#uk It would be good if Apple matched Dell and others who have already got a global take back policy for everywhere it's sales are and will be in the future. At least Apple has now committed to a common metric to measure take - now everyone can see how successful these programs are. Just having a policy in place doesn't mean they are effective (that goes for every company). Right now Apple's recycling rate measured in percent of past sales is about the same as HP (10%) Lets see who increase this rate the fastest.
