Our colleagues on board our ship, the Rainbow Warrior, are currently working with Medecins Sans Frontieres to get urgent medical supplies into Lebanon.
According to MSF:
"To date it has been very difficult to move large volumes of relief goods from Beirut to southern Lebanon by road. Trucks have been hit by missiles, so truck drivers are reluctant to move into the southern region and there are major problems in getting materials to Beirut quickly enough. The Greenpeace offer means a partial solution of one of our two problems."
"Medecins Sans Frontieres has around 30 international staff working in areas in Lebanon that are severely affected by the conflict. The emphasis in MSF’s activities is on supporting Lebanese health workers, setting up additional health posts and mobile clinics where necessary, and distributing basic materials (shelter, hygiene kits, cooking utensils, baby powder milk) to displaced families."
The Rainbow Warrior can transport 40 tonnes, or 105 pallets of supplies, which will cut down on MSF's problem of moving large goods along damaged and insecure roads. The ship and crew are currently in Larnaca, Cyprus where medical supplies are being loaded.
