Last month Greenpeace released its report Left in the Dust, detailing the radioactive contamination in the villages close to AREVA’s uranium mines in Niger.

AREVA have informed us that since January this year the company has employed an occupational doctor at its medical facilities in Niger. We are happy that AREVA is taking action, after already having cleaned up some radioactive hotspots in the mining town Akokan.

However, we remain concerned and stress the need for a comprehensive independent study. We are awaiting an action plan from AREVA detailing how they will address all the problems in the uranium mining area in Niger. We ask that AREVA attend to this as a matter of urgency.
