Greenpeace submission to the 2nd Joint Tuna RFMO meeting – Kobe 2 San Sebastian, Spain: 29 June to 3 July 2009

The widespread overexploitation of tuna fisheries around the globe, and contributing issues such as overcapacity, require an urgent and coordinated response. The first joint meeting of tuna Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs) held in the Japanese city of Kobe in January 2007 initiated an encouraging process. Over fifty countries, amongst them the most important tuna fishing nations, agreed then that emphasis should be put into fourteen key areas and challenges, and suggested four initial steps. Two and a half years later, Governments attending the second joint meeting of tuna RFMOs are looking into how to improve the process initiated in Kobe. They also need to consider how much progress has been made since that first meeting.
