In April 2008 representatives from 58 governments concluded the most authoritative assessment of past, present and future challenges of agricultural production, consumption, knowledge, research and development ever conducted on an intergovernmental level, the International Assessment on Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development (IAASTD).

Executive summary: The assessment was designed to address the overarching question: How can we reduce hunger and poverty, improve rural livelihoods, and facilitate equitable, environmentally, socially and economically sustainable development through the generation, access to, and use of agricultural knowledge, science and technology?

In this briefing Greenpeace aims to extract key facts, concepts and messages from the IAASTD that we believe must serve as a basis for the discussions of the G8 agricultural ministers meeting in Treviso Italy, 18-20 April 2009.
