Failure to Control Nuclear Contamination in Iraq

Letter from Greenpeace Executive Director Gerd Leipold to Kofi Annan about grave concerns over the lack of control of nuclear material in Iraq and the failure of the occupying forces to address environmental contamination and public health dangers. A Greenpeace team on the ground in Iraq uncovered radioactive sources around people's homes and schools as a result of widespread looting of the Tuwaitha nucear research centre. The complex, which had been sealed by the International Atomic Energy Agency, was left unguarded during the US invasion while troops secured oil installations. This letter outlines what the team found.
