The Greenpeace Forests for Climate (Tropical Deforestation Emission Reduction Mechanism TDERM) proposal for a hybrid market-linked fund would provide the financing needed to help protect the world's remaining tropical forests by reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (REDD).

Executive summary: This new mechanism would become part of the next (post 2012) phase of the Kyoto Protocol, although financing could be made available as early as 2009. A critical element of this proposal or any REDD mechanism would be to attain both climate and biodiversity objectives in a manner that fully respects the rights of the local and indigenous peoples.
