Carbon capture and storage (CSS) is not a quick-fix solution for climate change and many major challenges and uncertainties remain, as this case study of the Sleipner project highlights.

Executive summary: Despite governments and industry viewing carbon capture and storage (CCS) as a potential solution to the climate crisis, a wide range of issues regarding the safety, efficacy and permanency of CO2 storage remain unresolved. By examining the world’s longest running CO2 storage project - the Sleipner project, and the Utsira formation on which it is located - this briefing highlights some of the major challenges and uncertainties facing CCS.
