Fonterra’s announcement that it will clean up its use of palm kernel expeller (PKE) is a good first step, but the dairy giant must move towards a full phase out as soon as possible, says Greenpeace.

Greenpeace is calling for the Ruataniwha dam project in Hawke’s Bay to be scrapped in light of the latest lead on the gastro outbreak.

In response to the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment's report “Climate change and Agriculture: Understanding biological greenhouse gases”, Greenpeace Sustainable Agriculture Campaigner Genevieve Toop said:

The environment was at the centre of this election campaign and, whatever the exact makeup, the new government needs to take action. And Greenpeace says it will be there to make sure they do.

Greenpeace is applauding the new Labour-led Government on yesterday’s Speech from the Throne, which focused heavily on the significant challenges New Zealand faces around water quality and climate change.

Greenpeace have welcomed Fonterra’s pledge to substantially reduce climate emissions from agriculture, but say there is a “gaping hole” in the plan.
