Greenpeace is challenging New Zealand’s biggest company, Fonterra, to prove that its massive use of palm products is not fuelling the enormous fires raging across Indonesia.

Fonterra’s announcement that it will clean up its use of palm kernel expeller (PKE) is a good first step, but the dairy giant must move towards a full phase out as soon as possible, says Greenpeace.

Fonterra has launched a “plan” to clean up New Zealand’s waterways but Greenpeace says the dairy giant has failed to address the cow in the room.

Shortly after Fonterra released its highly criticised freshwater plan last week, Dairy NZ has followed suit and released their “strategy” to clean up New Zealand's rivers.

A major move by Landcorp to rid New Zealand farms of rainforest-destroying palm kernel has been welcomed by Greenpeace.

Auckland, 21 September 2010 – Following new evidence, Greenpeace demands that Fonterra and the Government put an end to New Zealand’s importation of palm kernel grown on areas of destroyed rainforest.

Fonterra has apparently 'pulled the plug' on its Facebook page, rather than answer the questions being submitted to it by members of the public on the company's use of palm kernel expeller (PKE).
