    UPDATE 1: Our investigations are going well. We’ve narrowed down what happened, and hope to have our email system back up and running later today or tomorrow.

    UPDATE 2: We’ve managed to confirm that all your financial data is safe, and was not compromised at all. Phew! We'll be back online soon.

  • Kermadec marine reserve great news - but not without real climate action

    Yesterday, at the United Nations meeting in New York, the New Zealand government announced that a vast stretch of its exclusive economic zone will be turned into an ocean sanctuary. It is the first time an area of New Zealand’s EEZ has been fully protected from all mining and fishing and will be among the world’s largest ocean reserves.

    It is  a very welcome move to preserve one of the most pristine and unique environments on earth. Well done Prime Minister Key.

    Greenpeace has long supported the call for a global network of marine reserves to cover  40 percent of our seas and oceans and was one of the groups  supporting protection of the  Kermadecs.   • Russel Norman to Lead Greenpeace New Zealand

    This morning we emailed over a quarter of a million Greenpeace supporters to tell them that Russel Norman has been appointed to replace me as executive director of Greenpeace New Zealand when I step down later this year.

    Some will be surprised to hear that a guy more accustomed to sitting inside Parliament is joining an organisation that’s more used to climbing it - but I firmly believe Russel is the right man for the job.

    Russel has the leadership skills, optimism, energy, vision and commitment to the environment that we need. And he shares our belief that people power is the key to bringing about positive change, and that civil disobedience and nonviolent direct action are vital to a healthy, robust democracy.

  • Rainbow Warrior heading for Auckland

    The Rainbow Warrior is heading to New Zealand

    Right now the Rainbow Warrior is heading across the Tasman Sea to Auckland.

    We will be holding Open Boats on Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th of July, at Princes Wharf in Auckland and would love for you to come on board and meet the crew!

    We'll be there between 9am and 4pm, on both days, so just pop down anytime. Bring your family and friends and if you're on Facebook please join our event to RSVP, invite your friends and help us get the word out.

    This is a special visit for two reasons.

    It's thirty years ago this month that the French secret service exploded two bombs on the first Rainbow Warrior, sinking her in Auckland harbour and killing our friend Fernando Pereira.

    Today all of our supporters will get a letter from me that you can read below.

    After a decade doing probably the best job in New Zealand, I've decided to resign as executive director. I have loved being part of Greenpeace New Zealand over the last 10 years as executive director. But now is the time for someone else to take on this wonderful role.

    Here's my letter:

    I think I have the best job in New Zealand. Being the head of Greenpeace is challenging, fun, humbling, often exhausting and always interesting.

    But, now it's time for someone else to do it.

    As a supporter of Greenpeace New Zealand I wanted to tell you personally that I have decided to resign from my position as executive director of Greenpeace New Zealand Aotearoa.
