  • Yesterday, Greenpeace New Zealand coordinated one of the largest civil disobedience climate protests in our country’s history, and it was a beautiful thing.

Inspired by the peaceful civil-disobedience of Te Whiti o Rongomai, Martin Luther King Jr, Gandhi and Rosa Parks, close to 300 people blocked all entrances to New Zealand’s largest oil industry conference. They did it simply with their bodies, and when the police asked them to move, they politely declined.

The message it sent to the oil industry was unmistakable. We are not going to stand by and allow the search for oil that we cannot afford to burn to continue. People power is strong and this peoples’ climate movement is getting stronger by the day. We grew stronger and we re-learned something importantIf your strategy is good en... Read more >

  • 2016 is already looking like it will top 2015 as the hottest year in recorded history.

Despite it being absolutely essential that we leave most of the world’s fossil fuels in the ground to avoid catastrophic climate change - John Key’s Government is still hell-bent on drilling for more oil.

That’s why on Monday, we will be at the oil industry conference at SkyCity in Auckland. Through non-violent peaceful civil disobedience inspired by Gandhi and Martin Luther King, we will send the strongest message we can that New Zealand must join the global fight to quit oil and meet the greatest challenge of our time - climate change.

Now is the time for people to stand up.

In this video posted today, climate movement leader Bill McKibben calls for New Zealanders to take action at the Oil Confer...

  • Today, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Barack Obama set a landmark precedent on the protection of Arctic waters.

In addition to several strong measures aimed at reducing methane emissions and improving adaptation actions for northern communities to climate change, the leaders agreed to make consistency with international and domestic climate goals a key test for proposed commercial activities in Arctic waters, including offshore drilling projects.

This is a great day for the Arctic! 7.6 MILLION people around the world are calling for permanent protection in this important region and today we took one major step closer.

If you haven't already you can join the movement here: www.savethearctic.org

  • Fonterra implicated in Indonesian forest fires

For months, forest fires raged across Indonesia bringing the world's attention to the country's devastating forest destruction. Both people and orang-utans were endangered as the fires raged and a thick, choking haze swept across Southeast Asia.

These forest fires were a legacy of decades of destruction by palm oil and paper companies. Despite 'no deforestation' promises held by companies, forests are still being trashed.

A recent investigation by Greenpeace International has shown forest and peatland destruction by so-called ‘sustainable’ palm oil companies, including Fonterra's PKE supplier Wilmar, is fuelling forest fires in Borneo.

Here's 10 shocking facts showing the scale of Indonesia's forest destruction, and why it needs to stop now.

    1. Indonesia now has the highest rate of defores... Read more >

  • Join the most important movement in history

Blogpost by Nick Young - November 19, 2015 at 15:30

Very soon, in hundreds of towns and cities across the world people like you will march for the climate, for Paris and for our shared humanity.

In the wake of appalling violence in Paris, political leaders will soon gather to decide what to do about something that impacts every living thing on the planet. Climate change.

Climate talks are infamous for their lack of political courage to tackle the greatest challenge of our time. That's why what happens behind closed doors in Paris is not as important as what happens outside on the streets of the world.

We, the People, will gather for something much bigger and more powerful.

In dozens of cities and towns across the globe, people are rising in an unprecedented movement that is demanding real climate action and stopping polluting energy in i... Read more >
