Our Core Values

Greenpeace's cornerstone principles and core values are reflected in all our environmental campaign work, worldwide. These are:

  • Bearing witness

We bear witness to environmental destruction in a peaceful, non-violent manner. It’s an old Quaker tradition, and we made it a core element of our work from the beginning. By going to the scene of environmental destruction we do not only register our opposition, we show the world what’s going on too. We are ready to go far to do this – and stick around (peacefully) for as long as we need to.

  • Non violence

We take non-violent direct action to raise the level and quality of public debate and end environmental problems. Whether it’s a sit-in in front of a local government, or the scaling of an oil rig – peaceful direct action is our way to get us all talking and demonstrate solutions. By taking action we show that an alternative is possible. The whale doesn’t need to die, the pollutants don’t need to go into the river by demonstrating that we open the door to a better future.

A strict principle is at the heart of all our actions. It’s the reason companies and governments respect us; it’s the reason our supporters give us their trust; it’s non-negotiable.

  • Independence

We ensure our financial independence from political or commercial interests. We do not accept money from either companies or governments. And we mean any money. Individual contributions, together with foundations grants, are the only source of our funding. Our independence gives us the authority we need to effectively tackle power, and make real change happen.

  • Greenpeace has no permanent friends or foes

In exposing threats to the environment and finding solutions we have no permanent allies or adversaries. If your government or company is willing to change we will work with you to achieve your aims. Dither, backtrack or turn around and we will be back.

What matters isn’t words, but actions, and, as far as we’re concerned, there’s only one standard in this: The environment has to benefit.

  • Promoting solutions

We seek solutions for, and promote open, informed debate about society's environmental choices. We don’t work to manage environmental problems, we work to eliminate them. That’s why we developed our roadmap to save the seas through the establishment of marine reserves, and an Energy [R]evolution blueprint that points the way to a clean economy. It’s not enough for us to point the finger; we develop, research and promote concrete steps towards a green and peaceful future for all of us.

In developing our campaign strategies and policies we take great care to reflect our fundamental respect for democratic principles and to seek solutions that will promote global social equity.
