Remember, remember the 21st of September...

PHILIPPINES - Proclamation No. 1081 (Proclaiming a State of Martial Law in the Philippines) was signed on September 21, 1972 by Ferdinand Marcos to suppress the increasing civil strife and the threat of a supposed communist takeover following a series of bombings and a government-staged assassination attempt on then Defence Minister Juan Ponce Enrile in Manila.

The declaration of martial law was initially well-received by some sectors, but it eventually proved unpopular as excesses and human rights abuses by the military emerged.

Today we are reminded of a dark time in our nation’s history, that eventually lead to a polarized society that became ripe for a peaceful revolt that paved the way for the restoration of a civilian democracy, where the law ensures the liberties that we are now enjoying.

Looking at today in the perspective of the climate crisis we are again in a time where lines are drawn as to whether we would choose to stand for a better future or for maintaining a status quo of overconsumption and unsustainability.

May the lesson of the Marcos’ declaration cause us to go not gently unto the night of environmental destruction.
