Greenpeace volunteers join hundreds of Baguio citizens and community groups to protest the plan of SM Mall Baguio to cut 43 trees and uproot another 139 at Luneta Hill to pave the way for the construction of a 7-floor parking building. Many of us are familiar with the catchphrase "what happens in Boracay stays in Boracay." Besides the issue of environmental degradation of that island, we believe the same could also apply to Baguio, which has been dubbed as the 'summer capital of the Philippines.'

The same statement can be rephrased as a question for all of us who have been captivated by Baguio: "What happens in Baguio stays in Baguio?"

Should the issue of the impeding earthballing of trees for the sake of a mall expansion be isolated only to a vibrant community that seeks to resist corporate intervention, not only for their livelihood, but also for their culture, heritage and ecology?

We hope not.

That is why we stand in solidarity with the people who speak up not only for their rights but also for that of the helpless trees that are haunted by the spectre of being cut down by SM.

We should not let paradise be paved to put up a parking lot.

Join us in this initiative of not only spreading the word but also of waking up the powers-that-be in SM to stop their madness. Sign up and send an email to SM and tell them to halt their expansion.

"A tree is beautiful, but what’s more, it has a right to life; like water, the sun and the stars, it is essential. Life on earth is inconceivable without trees." - Anton Chekhov

Tragically, trees run contrary to a corporation's idea of beauty & necessity, because it does not shine like gold nor command obedience like money.

SM City Baguio intends to cut 43 and uproot 139 trees at Luneta Hill to pave the way for the construction of a pay parking lot. The defenseless trees have no one but us to count on in their behalf. Join us in resisting SM from paving paradise to put up a parking lot!!!

Corporate greed should not be an excuse to destroy precious trees that are an integral part of our ecosystems. Help us make SM realize that once the trees are cut there is nothing left but the realization that we cannot eat money.
