Greenpeace statement on the violent dispersal by police forces of activists outside the US Embassy in Manila

Press release - October 19, 2016
In reaction to the violent dispersal by police forces of activists outside the US Embassy in Manila on the afternoon of 19 October 2016, GPSEA Executive Director Yeb Sano calls for sobriety from all sides:

"I am compelled to speak because what happened was an assault on our basic freedoms – of speech and of assembly at the very least. It is horrifying. It is brutal. And if we choose to look away, we are very close to becoming completely desensitized, and are complicit in this vicious cycle of violence gripping our society. Greenpeace condemns in the strongest manner the attack carried out by police forces against the activists. As a peaceful campaigning organization, Greenpeace rejects all forms of violence regardless of the purposes for which it is carried out. As we continue to witness other violent forms of dispersal, my message is that genuine change will only result from peaceful expression. Consorting violence and targeting human life can never be justified. We stand with those who put their life, limb, and liberty at risk to promote peace and assert righteous non-violent indignation. We pray for the quick recovery of those injured. And lastly, we pray for peace and justice."
