Greenpeace statement on Earth Hour 2011

Press release - March 26, 2011
Earth Hour 2011 aims to show the actions that people, businesses and governments world-wide are taking to reduce their environmental impact. Thereby establishing and encouraging others to join an interconnected global community engaged in dialogue and resource sharing that generates real solutions to environmental challenges.

Amalie Obusan, Climate & Energy Campaigner, Greenpeace Southeast Asia, said:

Greenpeace is promoting an Energy [R]evolution -- that is the massive uptake of Renewable Energy (RE), coupled with comprehensive Energy Efficiency (EE) measures. For the Philippines, we are proposing a target of 50% RE and 20% EE by 2020, for the country to be able to forge ahead with its development and become a formidable economy backed by sustainable energy and forward-looking plans. Fossil fuels not only harm the climate, but are a finite resource that would become more and more expensive as sources dwindle. The Philippines should not be hostage to such power sources, especially since renewable sources are indigenous and are abundant. The Philippines could be leading the way toward a sustainable energy future."
