Greenpeace Romania launched today the solar project offered to the local school of the coal town in Rovinari. The event engaged the school students and the local community. The solar panels on the school rooftop are part of the Greenpeace campaign to support the transition towards a future based on renewable resources. Renewable energy sources have a reduced impact on the environment, health and economy and are supporting the fight against climate change.
The 40 solar panels installed on the local school in Rovinari have a capacity of 250 W each and they will supply 25% of the school’s energy needs. The photovoltaic installation on the school will supply electricity also to the national system after finalizing the procedure of plugging into the distribution network, which is ongoing. Later, the school will have a bidirectional meter that will allow the connection to the network.
The event included a presentation of the project to mayor’s representatives from neighboring coal communities, among which: Roșia de Amaradia, Fărcășești, Negomir, Bărbătești, Țânțăreni. Also the participants were presented the financing perspectives for similar projects.
In parallel Greenpeace volunteers held a workshop on environmental topics for the local students.
At the event were also invited the mayor of Rovinari city and the principal of the school.
„We want that investments in clean energy sources and in consumption reduction would become a widespread phenomenon in the entire country, at all levels: from equipping the households to institutions and companies. The more these investments will flourish, the more they will be accessible and easier to implement. It is important to show that the pioneer phase is almost over and the terrain for widespread investments is already here,” said Ionuț Cepraga, energy campaigner at Greenpeace Romania.
In order to switch to renewable energy we need high-level decision making efforts – national strategies, legislation, financing – but as well at a local and individual level – implementing projects and effective realization of the transition.
The Greenpeace campaign is carrying on by offering a synthesis of available possible financing sources to potential project initiators in the renewable energy and energy efficiency fields, from the administrative and private sector, for the rural and urban environment.
