Regional Public Engagement Campaigner

The Regional Public Engagement Campaigner is a new role in the Greenpeace Southeast Asia Public Engagement, Actions and Investigations (PEAI) Unit. The unit is primarily responsible for developing strategies and the capacity for impactful Offline Engagement across all our offices and projects in Southeast Asia, from local groups and volunteering and open campaigning projects to Non-Violent Direct Actions (NVDA) and Investigations.

As the Regional Public Engagement Campaigner you will work closely together with the Public Engagement team of Greenpeace Southeast Asia and project and programme leaders to ensure high quality strategic input inline with our Engagement strategies and Programme priorities. You will equally work together with our country based teams towards building the required capacities and putting appropriate systems across GPSEA in place.

The Regional Public Engagement Campaigner is committed to affecting change through personal and civil activism. You have a background in organising, have worked with or been part of the movement and are therefore familiar interacting with allies and partner organisations. As a Campaigner you bring project management experience and can help develop objectives and appropriate tactics based on campaign strategies.

You have extensive experience in a position as a volunteer coordinator or similar, have designed supporter journeys, developed teams and played an active role in capacity building and strategic development.

You are a solution-oriented creative thinker, have strong communications skills, including mentoring and guiding, and have experience working in intercultural contexts, all of which will help you in strengthening and promoting people power and deeper engagement as a core campaigning approach throughout projects and Programme in Southeast Asia.

This is an initial 2 year contract based in either Bangkok, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur or Manila. Citizens of Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines are encouraged to apply.

Key Duties

  1. Contribute and be active part of our regional Public Engagement community
  • Closely engage with the GPSEA Public Engagement Community and facilitate community processes and meetings
  • Through active and facilitated coordination and skill-sharing between teams strengthen our capacities
  • Facilitate a culture of learning together, within the diversity of our region.
  • Document process and learnings through sophisticated metrics and reporting
  • Provide input and lead the development of volunteer and activist pathways, supporter journeys and explore opportunities to widen our volunteer and activist community.
  • Ensure and facilitate the connection between the regional and the international Engagement Community
  1. Contribute to the development of our regional Public Engagement capacities
  • In coordination with our regional Public Engagement community, assist and lead in needs assessments, trainings and development plans, in line with regional Programme priorities.
  • Together oversee and input into the development of relevant skills for Public Engagement Campaigners throughout the region such as basic volunteer management, organising, project management and campaign integration.
  • Ensure that lessons are learnt, through proper debriefs and evaluation, and contribute to their future application, e.g. through best practices, trainings, templates etc
  • Maintain and utilize a working knowledge of significant developments, trends, and best practices in the field of  public engagement / organizing.
  • Take a lead or contribute to public engagement projects of regional relevance, such as Volunteer databases, framework developments and local group strategies
  • Develop, design training pathways for volunteers and activists in line with our supporter journeys - and occasionally deliver trainings yourself.
  1. Facilitate and support the development and delivery of Engagement strategies across GPSEA & projects
  • Develop and advise GPSEA in the area of grassroots organizing strategies, tactics and methodologies to be applied within campaigns and project work.
  • Provide creative input into the development of project strategies and plans, with a focus on people engagement. Occasionally facilitate and guide creative processes in project developments.
  • Engage early with project leaders across the region to proactively identify engagement opportunities in projects
  • Translate campaign strategies in on the ground actions for volunteers and supporter
  • Support and/or advise our regional public engagement staff on project support.
  • Keep track and engage in relevant discussions about public engagement core issues such as supporter journey design, allies & partnerships, grassroots and people power throughout GPSEA.

  • Looking out for opportunities to building a cooperative network with trusted partner organisations and community partners across SEA.
  • Contribution and eventual participation in Greenpeace projects outside of the region.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the Line Manager.
  • Manage project budgets.

Educational Background & Fundamental Qualifications

Level of Education: Bachelor degree in Social Science or equivalent industry experience        

Work Experience: Volunteer/Organising/Grassroots Coordinator 3-5 years; Work in a campaigning organisation, 3-5 years

  • Extensive Experience working with and understanding of civil society in Southeast Asia – in particular people’s movements.
  • strong experience/knowledge of developing volunteers, offline mobilization, grassroots organizing and working with partners and coalitions
  • Knowledge and / or experience in: communications and working with diverse communities
  • Ability to connect with different cultural realities and flexibility to customise work plan accordingly.
  • Proven team leadership, management abilities and personnel assessment skills

This position requires the employee to have a flexible approach and the ability to adapt and work in different and challenging work and cultural environments, which may include flexible arrangements working in challenging field and frontline work environments.
