Hundreds of fisherfolk and stakeholders of the sea gathered in-front of the BFAR Central Office to challenge BFAR Director and DA USEC for Fisheries to a boodle fight against illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. June this year, the European Union identified Philippines as a non-cooperating country in combatting illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, and was given 6 months or a yellow card to clamp down on illegal fishing or face trade sanctions equivalent to thousands of jobs and a ban on fish imports from the Philippines. Across the country, many fishing grounds are already either depleted or currently being overfished specifically by large commercial vessels that are decimating the country’s rich marine resources to the detriment of poor coastal communities.
