The coronavirus pandemic has affected all of us. It has exposed the cracks in our unfair socioeconomic system and threatened the most vulnerable people among us, including those most essential to keeping society going.
How Canada recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic can be a new beginning. But for that to happen, we need to get to the root of the problem.
Corporate elites have used their influence to program our economy to reward executives and prioritize profits and consumerist lifestyles instead of prioritizing people and the relationships we have with each other and nature. Big business has lobbied against environmental and social protections while being allowed to unleash toxic pollution and destroy vital habitats. And our planet is struggling to support us.
We’re seeing the consequences now, as governments scramble to provide support to people big business has left to fend for themselves— and as a climate emergency and biodiversity crisis unfold around us simultaneously. People are struggling without sick pay or full health care coverage. Many have been laid off, and without an income, their ability to pay rent or make their mortgages is in jeopardy. Despite this, big polluters are asking government to bail them out of their financial troubles, so they can get back to business-as-usual.
Plans for how to restart the economy as Canada recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic should be a new beginning.
We won’t go “back to normal”. Instead we’ll leap into the future by reimagining what’s possible and reprogramming the rules of the economy so that it takes care of everyone and our planet. We’ll reinvent the world as we want it to be. This means prioritizing local, sustainable economies that strengthen our communities and reestablish our important connection with nature. We won’t let corporate executive profit from the pandemic or keep us locked in the consumerist status quo.
