We need a strong Nature &amp; Biodiversity Act, developed in collaboration with Indigenous communities. Let\u2019s urge Prime Minister Trudeau to pass one!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\"><\/div>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/03\/1a944331-gp0stslkv_high_res-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 601px) 50vw, 100vw\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/03\/1a944331-gp0stslkv_high_res-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/03\/1a944331-gp0stslkv_high_res-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/03\/1a944331-gp0stslkv_high_res-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/03\/1a944331-gp0stslkv_high_res-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/03\/1a944331-gp0stslkv_high_res-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/03\/1a944331-gp0stslkv_high_res-2048x1366.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/03\/1a944331-gp0stslkv_high_res-510x340.jpg 510w\" class=\"wp-image-52349 size-full\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The problem<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Canada has long been a country that views nature as an <strong>object to be excessively exploited<\/strong> rather than a <strong>being to be respected<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This mentality of take-take-take is devastating <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/sockeye-salmon-decline-diversity-b-c-1.5922533#:~:text=CBC%20News%20Loaded-,New%20research%20suggests%2070%25%20decline%20in%20diversity%20of%20B.C.%20sockeye,according%20to%20a%20new%20study\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/sockeye-salmon-decline-diversity-b-c-1.5922533#:~:text=CBC%20News%20Loaded-,New%20research%20suggests%2070%25%20decline%20in%20diversity%20of%20B.C.%20sockeye,according%20to%20a%20new%20study\" target=\"_blank\">salmon populations<\/a>, destroying the last slivers of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/opinion\/article-the-destruction-of-the-last-old-growth-forests-has-to-stop-we-must\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/opinion\/article-the-destruction-of-the-last-old-growth-forests-has-to-stop-we-must\/\" target=\"_blank\">old growth forests<\/a> in BC, and increasing Canada&#8217;s annual <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nrdc.org\/experts\/josh-axelrod\/canadas-boreal-clearcutting-climate-threat\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nrdc.org\/experts\/josh-axelrod\/canadas-boreal-clearcutting-climate-threat\" target=\"_blank\">greenhouse gas emissions<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But viewing nature as something <strong>separate from ourselves<\/strong> that can be continuously <strong>pillaged for profit<\/strong> is a devastating mistake. The forests, rivers, and oceans that sustain Canada\u2019s biodiversity <strong>are essential for us, too<\/strong>. They filter the water we drink, suck carbon out of the air, and nurture pollinators that help crops grow.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These ecosystems are also the <strong>territories of Indigenous Peoples<\/strong>, who have kept them healthy since time immemorial and who are, far too often, criminalized for defending them. <strong>Respecting Indigenous rights and protecting biodiversity are two sides of the same coin<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the federal government has <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/environment-climate-change\/services\/environmental-indicators\/conserved-areas.html\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/environment-climate-change\/services\/environmental-indicators\/conserved-areas.html\" target=\"_blank\">failed to deliver on its commitment<\/a> to protect 17% of Canada\u2019s lands and freshwaters under the <em>Convention on Biological Diversity<\/em>. Powerful industry lobbies deny there\u2019s a problem in order to delay action. And what little biodiversity policy <em>does <\/em>exist in Canada is a fragmented mess of provincial, federal, and territorial legislation that is <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facetsjournal.com\/doi\/10.1139\/facets-2020-0075\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.facetsjournal.com\/doi\/10.1139\/facets-2020-0075\" target=\"_blank\">plagued by endless delays<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This legal landscape means that governments consistently <strong>prioritize big corporations<\/strong> over <strong>Indigenous rights and a healthy environment<\/strong>, which in turn accelerates climate change and the further loss of biodiversity on a massive scale.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The solution<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Canada needs a strong <strong>Nature &amp;<\/strong> <strong>Biodiversity Act<\/strong> that <strong>protects nature<\/strong> right across the country \u2014 from the biggest forests to the smallest blades of seagrass \u2014 because every single part of a natural system contributes to the<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/2018\/mar\/12\/what-is-biodiversity-and-why-does-it-matter-to-us\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/2018\/mar\/12\/what-is-biodiversity-and-why-does-it-matter-to-us\" target=\"_blank\"> smooth functioning of the whole<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This Act should be <strong>created in deep partnership with Indigenous Peoples<\/strong>, whose rights and knowledge are key to the regeneration and responsible stewardship of stolen lands. It should <strong>shift power away from big corporations<\/strong> to the communities most impacted by environmental degradation. And it should establish <strong>firm biodiversity protection targets<\/strong> that include annual reports to the public to ensure transparency and accountability.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, while targets and reports are important, the Biodiversity Act must trigger a value shift within our governments, in which the ecological crisis, Indigenous knowledge, and the restoration of our connection with Nature are embedded in <strong>all levels of decision-making<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\"><em><strong>Acknowledgment:<\/strong> As a settler-founded environmental organization, Greenpeace Canada is on a journey to be in better relationship with the Earth, one that centers Indigenous experiences, knowledge and voices, as they are the inherent rights holders of the lands we operate upon.
