{"id":24286,"date":"2019-07-31T06:30:04","date_gmt":"2019-07-31T10:30:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/?p=24286"},"modified":"2019-11-06T03:27:23","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T08:27:23","slug":"climate-disasters-brought-to-you-by-shell-bp-exxon-and-suncor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/press-release\/24286\/climate-disasters-brought-to-you-by-shell-bp-exxon-and-suncor\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Climate Disasters brought to you by Shell, BP, Exxon, and Suncor\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Greenpeace names villains behind the climate emergency<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>31 July 2019 (MONTREAL) &#8211;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In collaboration with renowned street artist <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.roadsworth.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roadsworth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, known for his engaging street art in Montreal and abroad, Greenpeace activists rose early this morning to place large banners at the crossroad of LaGaucheti\u00e8re and Robert-Bourassa (in Montreal) to bring attention to the impacts of climate change and the role of the oil industry in contributing to the climate crisis. The installation was <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">designed to mimic how oil companies proudly tout the benefits of their products, but instead bring attention to the harm they cause because of climate change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Fighting climate despair through art<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The art installation consisted of six (13 x 3 feet) banners which depicted various climate disasters, including droughts, floods, forest fires and extreme storms to which fossil fuel producers are contributing, and a message reading (in french) <\/span><b>\u201c<\/b><b><i>Climate disasters proudly brought to you by Shell, BP, Exxon and Suncor<\/i><\/b><b>\u201d (<\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018D\u00e9sastres climatiques, gracieuset\u00e9 de Shell, BP, Exxon et Suncor)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Climate disasters have already cost countless lives and billions of dollars, as floods, droughts, wildfires and other extreme weather become stronger and more frequent. Meanwhile oil companies have spent millions on misleading advertising and lobbying to block action on climate change. Worldwide, the 100 biggest fossil fuel companies, including Exxon, Shell, BP, and Suncor, are responsible for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sustainable-business\/2017\/jul\/10\/100-fossil-fuel-companies-investors-responsible-71-global-emissions-cdp-study-climate-change\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">majority of the pollution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that has triggered the climate crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI want people to become more aware of the power they have to act on climate change. I hope that my street art will help them connect the dots and give them the inspiration and motivation they need to fight for a better future. Art is a powerful way to tell the truth about the oil industry. I encourage everyone to embrace their artistic side and explore their own creative ideas to expose the reality of climate change. We can make change happen together, from the ground up,<\/span><b>\u201d said Roadsworth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Subvertising activities in 25 cities around the world<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The installation happened the same day as Greenpeace activists blanketed over 25 cities around the world with satirical ads conveying a similar message to the Montreal installation and featuring other oil company logos: \u201cClimate emergency brought to you buy [oil company logos]\u201d. The cities where posters were placed in public spaces include Manila, Moscow, Athens, Oslo, Amsterdam, and New York. Similar subvertisements will appear in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal as the day unfolds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">his international day of creative protest comes on the heels of<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> months of student climate strikes and shortly before the release of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IPCC\u2019s special report on Climate Change and Land in August.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf we want to put an end to the oil industry\u2019s toxic business model, we must mobilize and tell the truth about this industry so that they, and our governments, can be held accountable,\u201d <\/span><b>said Yann Robitaille, Greenpeace activist and volunteer.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe climate crisis must become top of mind for all of us. Everyone needs to understand that it is already affecting our daily lives, our health and our future.
