The protest comes ahead of the Democratic debate tonight in nearby Houston.<\/p>\n<p>Here in Canada, as we head toward national elections, the stakes also couldn&#8217;t be higher. We&#8217;re in a climate emergency created by fossil fuel CEOs and we need politicians to start acting like it. <a href=\"https:\/\/act.gp\/2A9W1td\"><strong>Call on your <\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/act.gp\/2A9W1td\"><strong>federal election <\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/act.gp\/2A9W1td\"><strong>candidates to <\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/act.gp\/2A9W1td\"><strong>get behind a clean energy transition and<\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/act.gp\/2A9W1td\"><strong> Green New Deal<\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/act.gp\/2A9W1td\"><strong> for Canada<\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/act.gp\/2A9W1td\"><strong>.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Greenpeace is campaigning for a fossil-free future here at home and around the world.\u00a0 Here are five things to know about Texas and U.S. oil production:<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"magicdomid6\" class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-7989250374 b font-color-000000 font-size-medium\"><b>1.<\/b><\/span><span class=\"author-7989250374 b font-color-000000 font-size-medium\"><b>Texas has made the United States the world\u2019s largest oil producer.<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"magicdomid7\" class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-7989250374 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">Oil and gas production\u00a0<span class=\"author-6436740262 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">\u2014<\/span>\u00a0particularly from Texas\u2019 Permian and Eagle Ford basins, is on the rise.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"author-7989250374 font-color-000000 font-size-medium link-MTU2NzcwMDk1MzgxOS1odHRwczovL3d3dy5laWEuZ292L3BldHJvbGV1bS9kcmlsbGluZy9wZGYvcGVybWlhbi5wZGY=\"><a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/petroleum\/drilling\/pdf\/permian.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-attrib-id=\"MTU2NzcwMDk1MzgxOS1odHRwczovL3d3dy5laWEuZ292L3BldHJvbGV1bS9kcmlsbGluZy9wZGYvcGVybWlhbi5wZGY=\">According to the EIA<\/a><\/span><span class=\"author-7989250374 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">, o<\/span><span class=\"author-7989250374 font-size-medium\">il production in the Permian region has nearly quadrupled from 2010 to today, while natural gas production has more than doubled<\/span><span class=\"author-7989250374 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">. This has major climate repercussions, as carbon emissions from oil and gas production in the Permian basin alone could consume\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"author-7989250374 font-color-000000 font-size-medium link-MTU2NzcwMDkwNjYxMi1odHRwOi8vcHJpY2VvZm9pbC5vcmcvMjAxOS8wMS8xNi9yZXBvcnQtZHJpbGxpbmctdG93YXJkcy1kaXNhc3Rlci8=\"><a class=\"link\" href=\"http:\/\/priceofoil.org\/2019\/01\/16\/report-drilling-towards-disaster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-attrib-id=\"MTU2NzcwMDkwNjYxMi1odHRwOi8vcHJpY2VvZm9pbC5vcmcvMjAxOS8wMS8xNi9yZXBvcnQtZHJpbGxpbmctdG93YXJkcy1kaXNhc3Rlci8=\">one tenth of the entire world\u2019s carbon budget<\/a><\/span><span class=\"author-7989250374 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">, i.e. the upper limit of how much fossil fuel pollution can be burned before we blow past the<\/span><span class=\"author-7989250374 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">\u00a0boundary of 1.5 degrees Celsius of global warming.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-node-type=\"line\"><\/div>\n<div data-node-type=\"line\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/figure-seven.png\" width=\"900\" height=\"913\" \/><\/div>\n<h3 data-node-type=\"line\"><\/h3>\n<h3 id=\"magicdomid11\" class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-7989250374 b font-color-000000 font-size-medium\"><b>2. More oil is being exported than ever, risking climate catastrophe.<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"magicdomid12\" class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-7989250374 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">This oil and gas boom not only threatens our climate, but more and more of these dangerous fossil fuels are being shipped overseas to be burned there. The U.S. Gulf Coast became a net exporter of crude oil in late 2018 and the U.S. as a whole is projected to become a\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"author-7989250374 font-color-000000 font-size-medium link-MTU2NzcwMTA1MjY5Ny1odHRwczovL3d3dy5laWEuZ292L3RvZGF5aW5lbmVyZ3kvZGV0YWlsLnBocD9pZD0zODY3Mg==\"><a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=38672\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-attrib-id=\"MTU2NzcwMTA1MjY5Ny1odHRwczovL3d3dy5laWEuZ292L3RvZGF5aW5lbmVyZ3kvZGV0YWlsLnBocD9pZD0zODY3Mg==\">net exporter by next year<\/a><\/span><span class=\"author-7989250374 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">. The area is home to corporate headquarters and major refineries owned by the very companies that\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"author-7989250374 font-size-medium\">have profited the most from the fossil fuels that have\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"author-6436740262 font-size-medium\">caused<\/span><span class=\"author-7989250374 font-size-medium\">\u00a0the climate crisis<\/span><span class=\"author-7989250374 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">. It\u2019s no coincidence that spills, leaks, fires, and other environmental disasters are frequent in the Houston region. The city is home to a vibrant resistance that we can all learn from. Groups like\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/tejasbarrios.org\/\">t.e.j.a.s.\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0(<\/span><span class=\"author-262286065 font-color-666666 font-size-medium\">Texas Environmental Justice Advocacy Services) are building power with fenceline communities, fighting to prevent dangerous petrochemical disasters and leaks \u2014 while holding corporations accountable for them, and famously organizing \u2018Toxic Tours.\u2019 The tours bring people to the East End of Houston, where some of the largest refineries and chemical plants surround neighborhoods and spew toxins into the air.
