Microplastics and toxins from making plastic are often in the air we breathe and the water we drink. An unsettling thought! As our understanding of the devastating effects of plastic on communities and the environment grows\u2014so does the understanding that the only way to stop this is to cut production, transform our collective ways of consumption, and hold corporations accountable for their role in the plastic problem and new way forward toward a reuse revolution. With<\/span><b> global plastic production and packaging industries set to <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2017\/dec\/26\/180bn-investment-in-plastic-factories-feeds-global-packaging-binge\"><b>expand production<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of new plastic by nearly 40% in the next few years, we need to remind them of what the overflowing plastic is doing to our planet and ourselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s an easy way that you can help do that, and get a little fresh air while you\u2019re at it! From now until World Cleanup Day,<strong> September 21st<\/strong>, do a quick cleanup and brand audit somewhere near you!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-25154 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2019\/09\/d8a3b350-gp0stsgaw_web_size_with_credit_line-1-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2019\/09\/d8a3b350-gp0stsgaw_web_size_with_credit_line-1-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2019\/09\/d8a3b350-gp0stsgaw_web_size_with_credit_line-1-227x340.jpg 227w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2019\/09\/d8a3b350-gp0stsgaw_web_size_with_credit_line-1.jpg 533w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Aren\u2019t familiar with a Brand Audit?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Well, much of plastic polluting our communities comes clearly branded with a company name, which means we can record not just the types of pollution we find but the companies that made it. On World Cleanup Day in 2018, thousands of volunteers in hundreds of cities reported the brands found in their local parks, streets, and shorelines. We used <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakfreefromplastic.org\/globalbrandauditreport2018\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the data <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to highlight exactly how some of the world&#8217;s biggest and best-known companies are wrecking the planet. Based on the audit results, globally we identified the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakfreefromplastic.org\/globalbrandauditreport2018\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2018 top polluters: Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and Nestle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In Canada, our results revealed the top 5 plastic polluters to be: Nestl\u00e8, Tim Hortons, PepsiCo, Coca-Cola and McDonald\u2019s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/21771\/nestle-wanted-us-to-post-their-statement-here-it-is-with-a-few-clarifications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Companies like Nestle are starting to respond<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They see that their packaging practices are quickly becoming outdated and unpopular. They have started to make promises to reduce their plastic pollution impact, but the short-sighted options big companies are putting forward are <\/span><b>a long way from the complete change in packaging methods that we urgently need<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. So<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/21906\/nestle-we-wont-stop-till-you-drop-plastic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> we need to keep the pressure on now more than ever and send a strong signal that <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/23173\/reduce-once-or-clean-forever\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clean forever\u2014or reduce once<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>So this year we plan to go even bigger\u2014that\u2019s where you come in.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-25156 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2019\/09\/8d74db78-gp0stsgbh_web_size_with_credit_line-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2019\/09\/8d74db78-gp0stsgbh_web_size_with_credit_line-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2019\/09\/8d74db78-gp0stsgbh_web_size_with_credit_line-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2019\/09\/8d74db78-gp0stsgbh_web_size_with_credit_line-510x340.jpg 510w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2019\/09\/8d74db78-gp0stsgbh_web_size_with_credit_line.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>There are <\/span><b>three ways to do a Brand Audit.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 1. Host a cleanup and audit with your friends, family, community. 2. Add a brand audit to an existing community\/shoreline cleanup. 3.
