So today we are delivering a message directly to the company\u2019s owner in downtown Toronto,\u201d said Shane Moffatt, Head of Nature and Food campaign at Greenpeace Canada.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Greenpeace activists inside the building are delivering a giant sign reading \u2018<\/span><b>Don\u2019t Flame Grill the Amazon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThese fires are no accident. The forests are being deliberately set on fire to open up more land for cattle and industrial agriculture. A company like Burger King that purchases meat from Brazil can\u2019t continue business as usual <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">while the biggest rainforest in the world burns down for cattle farms.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> That\u2019s why we are taking action today at the owner\u2019s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> headquarters right here in Canada<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,\u201d Moffatt added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In response to the crisis in the Amazon, Greenpeace has<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/press-release\/24957\/greenpeace-calls-on-fast-food-giants-to-take-a-stand-against-bolsonaros-amazon-destruction\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">launched a global campaign<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> urging fast-food giants Burger King, McDonald\u2019s and KFC to reject President Jair Bolsonaro\u2019s anti-environmental agenda and goods linked to destruction of the Amazon. Since the fires started, over a quarter of a million people have<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/act.greenpeace.org\/page\/47929\/petition\/1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">signed a petition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> calling on these companies to take a stand.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Close to 2.5 million hectares of land <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">including significant new deforestation <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was burned in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brazilian Amazon during August, according to new data published by <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/queimadas.dgi.inpe.br\/queimadas\/aq1km\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">INPE<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on September 3. The number of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/queimadas.dgi.inpe.br\/queimadas\/bdqueimadas\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">fires in the Amazon increased<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by 111% since the start of President Bolsonaro\u2019s presidency.
