Toronto – <\/b>Greenpeace activists are delivering a message inside and outside the global headquarters of Burger King owner Restaurant Brands International.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Amazon is still on fire and fast food companies like Burger King can\u2019t stay silent anymore. So today we are delivering a message directly to the company\u2019s owner in downtown Toronto,\u201d said Shane Moffatt, Head of Nature and Food campaign at Greenpeace Canada.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThese fires are no accident. The forests are being deliberately set on fire to open up more land for cattle and industrial agriculture. A company like Burger King that purchases meat from Brazil can\u2019t continue business as usual <\/span>while the biggest rainforest in the world burns down for cattle farms.<\/span> That\u2019s why we are taking action today at the owner\u2019s<\/span> headquarters right here in Canada<\/span>,\u201d Moffatt added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In response to the crisis in the Amazon, Greenpeace has<\/span> launched a global campaign<\/span><\/a> urging fast-food giants Burger King, McDonald\u2019s and KFC to reject President Jair Bolsonaro\u2019s anti-environmental agenda and goods linked to destruction of the Amazon. Since the fires started, over a quarter of a million people have<\/span> signed a petition<\/span><\/a> calling on these companies to take a stand.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Close to 2.5 million hectares of land <\/span>\u2014<\/span>including significant new deforestation <\/span>\u2014<\/span> was burned in <\/span>Brazilian Amazon during August, according to new data published by <\/span>INPE<\/span><\/a> on September 3. The number of <\/span>fires in the Amazon increased<\/span><\/a> by 111% since the start of President Bolsonaro\u2019s presidency. According to the <\/span>IPCC<\/span><\/a>, animal agriculture <\/span>\u2014 <\/span>the production of livestock and animal feed \u2013 is responsible for 60% of food-related greenhouse gas emissions as well as being the leading cause of deforestation.<\/span><\/p>\n
