These measures are intended to address the climate and extinction crises and improve urban health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to data <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/daily-quotidien\/191009\/dq191009b-eng.htm?CMP=mstatcan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">just released by Statistics Canada<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, household spending on food and beverages in Canada accounted in 2015 for a quarter of indirect emissions and were a top source of GHG emissions after household energy consumption.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.c40.org\/other\/good-food-cities\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">declaration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> released today during the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.c40.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Summit of the C40 cities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Copenhagen, the mayors furthermore committed to aligning their food procurement policies with a planetary health diet by 2030 &#8211; rich in plant-based food with less from animal sources. This would equate to a maximum average of 300 grams of meat per person per week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>In Toronto, Greenpeace Canada Nature and Food Campaigner Yasmeen Peer:\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cGreenpeace applauds Mayor Tory\u2019s commitment to making Toronto a more healthy, livable and sustainable city. Implementing this ambitious declaration will be one of the most effective ways Toronto can tackle the climate emergency the city recently declared.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">More than half of the world\u2019s population lives in cities, which have a key role to play in addressing the climate crisis. Ensuring greater access to affordable, local and plant-based food for all is a win-win for people and the planet. We look forward to working with diverse communities throughout Toronto and with Mayor Tory to deliver on this vision.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>In Montr\u00e9al, Greenpeace Nature and Food Campaigner Marie-Jos\u00e9e Beliveau:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe don\u2019t have time to spare. Montr\u00e9al should swiftly follow the example set by Toronto, especially in light of the leadership Mayor Val\u00e9rie Plante has recently shown in a number of environmental initiatives. In order to reach the 55% emissions reduction targets announced by Mayor Plante at the Climate Summit in New York, the City of Montr\u00e9al&#8217;s food policies would be a good place to start. Ensuring better access to nutritious local foods and lowering meat consumption in our city would ensure real progress.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eatforum.org\/eat-lancet-commission\/eat-lancet-commission-summary-report\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">signatory cities will adopt scientific recommendations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to support better food choices that also reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This follows last week\u2019s call by over 100 scientists around the world including David Suzuki for<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/scientists4lessmeat.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> city leaders to reduce urban meat consumption<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.
