I meant to write about it after a year had passed but life happened to me in all sorts of ways so here I am, better late than even later.&nbsp; Here is some of what we&#8217;ve been up to.<br \/>\n<\/span><b><br \/>\nApril 2018&nbsp; &#8211; Earth Day and our Inception!<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Our first outing as a group in April 2018 was to <b>Earth Day parade<\/b> when there was just four of us in the group &#8211; the youngest member being my daughter Minagua, back when it was easy to just take her along anywhere. To this day, we are all still involved as very active members. Ella&nbsp; mainly with our Greenspeakers program, and Ekaterina, leading our art builds and much more !<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-25987 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2019\/10\/bd7ef560-screen-shot-2019-10-08-at-1.52.32-pm-300x265.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2019\/10\/bd7ef560-screen-shot-2019-10-08-at-1.52.32-pm-300x265.png 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2019\/10\/bd7ef560-screen-shot-2019-10-08-at-1.52.32-pm.png 351w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>June 2018 &#8211; Our Plastic Monster<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In June 2018 , our first big project was a <b>plastic monster<\/b>, in snake form. We never did give him a name, but he is still haunting GP warehouse and shedding disposable plastic. I hope we will rework him some day soon and give him a second lease on life, on his mission to call attention to our terrible plastics problem. Maybe we could call him Messy (Get it? Like Nessy, the lake monster?, or like the soccer player who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-40534761\">cheats on taxes?<\/a>) and parade him in some other gathering of people.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For his first appearance, we took him to <\/span><b>Car Free Day<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where&nbsp; we had a Greenpeace booth set up to speak with people about our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/act\/break-free-from-plastic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Break Free from Plastics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> campaign.&nbsp; We asked folks to sign a pledge to take action on plastic pollution and&nbsp; to <a href=\"https:\/\/act.greenpeace.org\/page\/22385\/petition\/1?_ga=2.80989335.1843984892.1570719364-2128915833.1516633172#top\">receive a toolkit<\/a> to support them.<br \/>\n<strong>This was the start of our activities and we were very excited!<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After that we also started <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/act\/greenspeakers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greenspeakers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with the help of Michael Suksi a volunteer Greenpeace organizer in Toronto. So far I have given 2 presentations!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-25981\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2019\/10\/fd2fa0a6-screen-shot-2019-10-08-at-1.20.20-pm-300x212.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2019\/10\/fd2fa0a6-screen-shot-2019-10-08-at-1.20.20-pm-300x212.png 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2019\/10\/fd2fa0a6-screen-shot-2019-10-08-at-1.20.20-pm.png 479w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>September 2018 &#8211; Vancouver Beach Clean Up and Brand Audit<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In September,&nbsp; we participated in a big countrywide <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/story\/26063\/who-tops-canadas-plastic-polluters-list-this-year\/\"><b>beach clean up and brand audit<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where we found out our beaches are riddled with all the detritus created by companies shutting their eyes to the mess they create and refusing to consider more sustainable options. Massive top polluting companies like Nestle and Tim Hortons,&nbsp; could wield so much power for good if they chose to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-25952 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2019\/10\/1f04c091-screen-shot-2019-10-08-at-1.20.36-pm-300x194.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2019\/10\/1f04c091-screen-shot-2019-10-08-at-1.20.36-pm-300x194.png 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2019\/10\/1f04c091-screen-shot-2019-10-08-at-1.20.36-pm-510x329.png 510w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2019\/10\/1f04c091-screen-shot-2019-10-08-at-1.20.36-pm.png 610w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also in September, we&nbsp; tried our hand at a <\/span><b>fundraiser<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to raise money for people arrested protesting the Transmountain <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/tag\/oil\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pipeline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This endeavour did not meet with great success I have to say. Having organized a few events for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pull-together.ca\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pull Together<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before I felt pretty confident we could pull this off but somehow, I messed up the communication with our lovely sponsors Chickpea and we never got the food they were so kindly donating, and the concert pretty much felt like my birthday as most of the 20 people in attendance were my personal friends.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, we got to enjoy the charming quirky protest accordion music of geoff Berner, one of my favourite Vancouver live gigs, in an intimate setting! He has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zneicDPdicg\">brilliant song<\/a> about building oil pipelines in this day and age.&nbsp; <b>That night, we also danced <\/b>to the vibes of <a href=\"https:\/\/pachapapa.bandcamp.com\/\">PachaPapa.&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Denise Brennan, manager of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thepace.ca\/the-space\/coworking\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Pace coworking space<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (where we held the event) put it best: \u201cVancouver is like that, you just never know is gonna fly. You just have to try.\u201d So, we did, and I think we won&#8217;t do it again for a while.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>November 2018 &#8211; Plastic Attack!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our next adventure was a <\/span><b>Plastic Attack<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ! Modelled after something we had seen in a video from the UK, 7 of us&nbsp; went to two supermarkets to challenge the proliferation of single use plastics . You can read about it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/greenwire.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/blogs\/vancouver-plastic-attack\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in our blog. We gave them reusable containers and helped them transfer their food into them after paying. We then left a cart filled with a pretty depressing amount of (mostly) soft plastics and delivered a letter to customer service asking them to phase out this kind of packaging in their stores. (Hmmm &#8230; still thinking about that one)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>April 2019 &#8211; Earth Day united!<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In April, we returned to <b>Earth Day<\/b> parade, after having created a brilliant banner at our art build<\/p>\n<p><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-26217\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2019\/10\/cf2bbbc1-screen-shot-2019-10-10-at-10.52.40-am-300x218.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2019\/10\/cf2bbbc1-screen-shot-2019-10-10-at-10.52.40-am-300x218.png 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2019\/10\/cf2bbbc1-screen-shot-2019-10-10-at-10.52.40-am-467x340.png 467w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2019\/10\/cf2bbbc1-screen-shot-2019-10-10-at-10.52.40-am.png 576w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>May 2019 &#8211; Town Hall for a Green New Deal<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In May, <\/span><b>we joined forces with 350 Vancouver&nbsp; to host a big town hall for the Green New Deal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where we heard from people from all walks of life on their vision for a Green New Deal. Answers were recorded and together with many other town halls across the country, formed a chorus or a cacophony&nbsp; of voices that was later distilled into this comprehensive and uplifting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/story\/23761\/infographic-what-is-the-green-new-deal\/?fbclid=IwAR02Ue4cx_QWqKTOgIOC1O8MTqFSiGu_4Jm1WdZOaZzmJ_ShjzUao7R22ek\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proposal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>June 2019 &#8211; Engaging with Kids and Making BIG Polluters Pay<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year, we also returned to <\/span><b>Car Free Day<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp; This time to talk to people about our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/act\/protect-the-oceans\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Protect the Oceans campaign<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, asking them to sign a petition for the UN to protect 30 % of the ocean by 2030&nbsp; by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creating a global network of ocean sanctuaries that would put millions of square kilometres off limits to destructive industries<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <strong>We asked children to help us paint a message<\/strong> about our love for the ocean to send it to our Canadian government ahead of the talks at the UN about this proposal.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-25961 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2019\/10\/c2a8d270-img_1366-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2019\/10\/c2a8d270-img_1366-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2019\/10\/c2a8d270-img_1366-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2019\/10\/c2a8d270-img_1366-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2019\/10\/c2a8d270-img_1366-453x340.jpg 453w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2019\/10\/c2a8d270-img_1366.jpg 1288w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In June, we also organized public deputations at Vancouver City Hall &#8211; supporting people that wanted to speak out in support of a motion to <a href=\"https:\/\/act.greenpeace.org\/page\/39814\/petition\/1?locale=en-US&amp;_ga=2.85517465.1843984892.1570719364-2128915833.1516633172\">hold BIG polluters accountable <\/a>for their fair share of the climate crisis.&nbsp; You can read my blog on that awesome experience <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/story\/23827\/a-day-in-the-life-of-a-greenpeace-volunteer\/\">here<\/a> and you can watch snippets of the speeches <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=93rH2iYfOi4\">here<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p><b>August 2019 &#8211; Artivism! Culture Jamming, Art Deliveries, Screen Printing, and Street Murals !<\/b><\/p>\n<p>August was busy and creative month! We joined Greenpeace staff and Sustainabiliteens&nbsp; and participated in a <b>global day of culture jamming <\/b>as part of Greenpeace\u2019s&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/act\/people-vs-oil\/\">People vs Oil <\/a>&nbsp;campaign.&nbsp; Our action joined the network of 28+ actions that took place in city streets around the world bringing public attention to the worlds\u2019 worst oil companies and their connection to the climate disasters around the world such as floods and fires. The Minister was not there, but his staff were very friendly and seemed very relieved&nbsp; on discovering the big canvas we were holding up in front of their office was a charming colourful kid\u2019s painting. We engaged with so many new people and encouraged them&nbsp; to join us in more DIY screen printing of Green New Deal t-shirts and tote bags at the Trout Lake Park Farmers Market. The result was many pretty t-shirts enriched with optimistic political art and many interesting conversations. I hatched this plan with Andrew from 350 Vancouver to get as many groups as possible together to coordinate everyone\u2019s actions for the day of the <b>Climate Strike<\/b><strong> on September 27th<\/strong>.&nbsp; There ended up being quite a few groups involved!&nbsp; It turned into biweekly meetings sitting down with Sustainabiliteens to figure out ways to follow their lead and support these youth. Exciting times!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alongside all the planning and striking&nbsp; in September, we also found time for more training!
