{"id":26517,"date":"2019-10-22T07:00:40","date_gmt":"2019-10-22T11:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/?p=26517"},"modified":"2019-11-06T03:26:56","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T08:26:56","slug":"statement-from-canadas-leading-national-environmental-groups-on-the-election-of-a-liberal-minority-government","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/press-release\/26517\/statement-from-canadas-leading-national-environmental-groups-on-the-election-of-a-liberal-minority-government\/","title":{"rendered":"Statement from Canada\u2019s Leading National Environmental Groups on the election of a Liberal (minority) government"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canadians have sent a clear message with this election: they favour strong environmental protection and want the federal government to dramatically ramp up action to reverse species decline and tackle Canada\u2019s emissions in line with what the science says is needed to keep temperatures from rising above 1.5C degrees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no time to waste. Canada\u2019s new government will need to get to work as soon as possible to make good on the promises made during the election. We urge the parties to work together to deliver on their promises, many of which are consistent with each other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specifically, the Liberal Party, Bloc Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois, Green Party and New Democratic Party have agreed to the following commitments:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A legislated climate plan to reduce Canada\u2019s emissions in line with keeping warming below 1.5\u00b0C; and a plan that would describe programs to reduce emissions from transportation, buildings and the oil and gas sector;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Just Transition plan to ensure workers and their families thrive during the transition to a low-carbon economy;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At least 30 per cent of Canada\u2019s land, freshwater and ocean will be protected by 2030 and managed to the highest international standards for ecological integrity (Liberal, Green, and NDP);<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canadians will be protected from pesticides, pollution and toxics in everyday products by modernizing the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canadian Environmental Protection Act <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and strengthening federal regulation of pesticides;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A national strategy that includes a ban on the production, sale and distribution of the most problematic and unnecessary single-use plastics, and that works to create a circular economy focused on reuse;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To uphold the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and the protection of Indigenous and treaty rights.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We expect these commitments will be included in the mandate letters issued to members of Cabinet by the Prime Minister, and we look forward to engaging with the government on turning these promises into policy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a joint statement by: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight:
