Thousands of you made phone calls, sent emails and left social media messages for Justin Trudeau during our<strong> <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/act\/spam-your-pm-for-climate\/\" target=\"_blank\">SPAM-A-THON<\/a><\/strong>. Together we sent a strong message to the now minority Liberal Government: declaring a Climate Emergency and then <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_ca\/article\/wjvkqq\/canada-justin-trudeau-declares-climate-emergency-then-approves-trans-mountain-pipeline-expansion\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>approving the expansion of a pipeline <\/strong><\/a>the very next day isn\u2019t good enough. Acknowledging that we are in a Climate Emergency is merely the first step; the second step is to <em>act like it<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n<p>With <a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/cop25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\"><strong>COP25<\/strong><\/a> just around the corner, we need Canada to assert strong climate leadership. We need the Trudeau government and his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/politics\/trudeau-expands-cabinet-promotes-seven-rookies-and-shakes-up-existing-ministers-1.4694012\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\"><strong>freshly anointed Cabinet<\/strong><\/a> to demonstrate a Climate Emergency response plan that responds to the scale of the crisis. A plan that:<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>1)<\/strong> Is aligned with the best available science, so will eliminate all carbon emissions before 2050 to avoid the worst effects of climate change.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>2) <\/strong>Has targets for 2025 and 2030 consistent with getting there, and independent reporting on whether we are on track.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>3) <\/strong>Ensures everyone in my community has a good job, because the big changes we need to make to solve the climate crisis can also address its twin scourge of growing inequality.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>4) <\/strong>Takes back the power and stop letting Big Oil companies influence government decisions. Your policies must be for the people, not the millionaires. This begins with an end to subsidies to fossil fuels and the expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure, including the cancellation of the Transmountain expansion pipeline.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>5)<\/strong> Stops putting extractive industries interests before Indigenous rights. The government should implement free, prior and informed consent for all indigenous communities coast to coast to coast.<\/p>\n\n<p>If they are seeing their re-election as a chance for a \u2018do-over\u2019, an opportunity to listen to those who raised concerns over their last term in office, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/politics\/political-opinion\/2019\/11\/20\/with-his-new-cabinet-justin-trudeau-attempts-to-correct-past-missteps.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\"><strong>Susan Delaware has suggested<\/strong><\/a>, then <strong><em>let\u2019s give them something to listen to<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>The global climate strike that saw nearly a million Canadians take to the streets to demand action has not gone unnoticed. Something to watch out for: the federal government has indicated that it is willing to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/edmonton.citynews.ca\/2019\/11\/21\/liberals-open-to-changing-federal-laws-at-heart-of-western-anger-carr-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"water down even further  (opens in a new tab)\">water down even further <\/a><\/strong>its new environmental assessment act to try to appease oil and gas interests.<\/p>\n\n<p>One would have thought that Stephen Guilbeault, <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/politics\/election-2019\/traitor-to-the-cause-or-radical-pragmatist-quebec-environmentalists-run-as-liberal-candidate-draws-criticism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\"><strong>with his background in environmental activism<\/strong><\/a> and his anti-pipeline stance, would have been a no-brainer for the role of Environment Minister. We\u2019re in a Climate Emergency, after all. Wouldn\u2019t it be best to have an environmentalist at the helm of such a key position? But Justin Trudeau appointed him as the Minister of Heritage instead (leaving the environmental community <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/politics\/election-2019\/traitor-to-the-cause-or-radical-pragmatist-quebec-environmentalists-run-as-liberal-candidate-draws-criticism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\"><strong>rolling their eyes<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>So let\u2019s keep the pressure on<\/strong>: <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"tell Justin Trudeau you want to see strong climate leadership (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?text=%23COP25%20is%20just%20around%20the%20corner.%20%40JustinTrudeau%20you%20were%20elected%20with%20a%20mandate%20to%20act%20on%20the%20%23ClimateEmergency,%20to%20achieve%20net%20zero%20emissions%20by%202050.%0A%0ACanadians%20expect%20strong%20climate%20leadership%20and%20courage%20%3E%3E%20https%3A\/\/act.gp\/35otYUv%20%40GreenpeaceCA\" target=\"_blank\">tell Justin Trudeau you want to see strong climate leadership<\/a><\/strong> from Canada at COP25.
