The withdrawal of the application to build the controversial Frontier mine came mere days before the federal Cabinet was scheduled to decide on whether or not to grant a permit.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>This would not have been possible without the leadership of Indigenous communities and the tens of thousands of Greenpeace supporters across the country, who took action.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Three months ago, very few people had heard of Teck\u2019s Frontier mine. Its approval was considered a no-brainer because no tar sands project has ever been rejected. But, by working with a movement led by Indigenous Climate Action, we were able to push it to the top of the public and media agenda. Ultimately, we were able to turn it into a litmus test of Justin Trudeau&#8217;s government&#8217;s commitment to acting on the climate crisis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Teck withdrawing its application for the Frontier tar sands project, the largest ever proposed open pit mine, is a win for Indigenous rights, sovereignty and the climate. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ORkeC7atpg\">https:\/\/t.co\/ORkeC7atpg<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Indigenous Climate Action (@Indigenous_ca) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Indigenous_ca\/status\/1231788432717963265?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 24, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>By Teck\u2019s own admission, things are changing<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>The company explained its withdrawal citing public pressure and changing financial markets that are increasingly locking in a demand for serious climate policy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a short excerpt from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teck.com\/media\/Don-Lindsay-letter-to-Minister-Wilkinson.pdf\">letter<\/a> Teck\u2019s CEO sent to Jonathan Wilkinson, Canada\u2019s Minister for Environment and Climate Change. Can you believe this was written by a fossil fuel executive?<\/p>\n\n<p>&#8220;<em>global capital markets are changing rapidly and investors and customers are increasingly looking for jurisdictions to have a framework in place that reconciles resource development and climate change, in order to produce the cleanest possible products<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>Fossil fuel companies are losing their social license as the truth about their impact on the climate crisis set in. When I met with a Liberal staffer for Deputy Prime Minister Freeland last Friday, they said that Greenpeace had been \u201cvery effective\u201d in getting our message across. That was our supporters and allies in action, like student activist Ashley Torres who joined us in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/press-release\/29282\/greenpeace-welcomes-cabinet-back-to-ottawa-with-a-burning-call-to-reject-teck\/\">taking action outside Parliament<\/a> in Ottawa to send a message to Cabinet last week.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/BREAKING?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#BREAKING<\/a> ?Our house is on fire ?<br>We are welcoming cabinet ministers back to the House of Commons with a fiery demand to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/RejectTeck?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#RejectTeck<\/a>. [&#8230;] Questions about the societal implications of energy development, climate change and Indigenous rights are critically important ones for Canada, its provinces and Indigenous governments to work through.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p>This has been plain in the struggle of the Wet\u2019suwet\u2019en Nation to protect their lands from the Coastal GasLink natural gas pipeline, which does not have consent from the hereditary leaders <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/story\/28856\/what-you-might-not-know-about-indigenous-law-and-the-raids-on-wetsuweten\/\">who are the title holders of the land<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Yesterday, the Ontario Provincial Police moved in and arrested Mohawk Land Defenders at the Tyendinaga rail blockade. The blockade started nearly three weeks ago in solidarity with Wet&#8217;suwet&#8217;en hereditary chiefs who are defending their territory in British Columbia against the Coastal Gaslink pipeline.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>If this victory against Teck has shown me anything, it\u2019s that people taking action together can make a difference.<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/act.greenpeace.org\/page\/55944\">Please call Prime Minister Justin Trudeau\u2019s office now to express solidarity with the Wet\u2019suwet\u2019en people defending their lands against this destructive pipeline.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>People power stopped the largest tar sands mine ever proposed.
