(c) Jerome Turner \/ Ricochet.<div class=\"credit icon-left\"> \u00a9 Jerome Turner \/ Ricochet<\/div><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>Since February 6th, when the RCMP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_ca\/article\/qjdjaq\/rcmp-are-raiding-wetsuweten-land-defender-camps\">began raiding Indigenous Wet\u2019suwet\u2019en lands<\/a>, solidarity protests, marches, blockades and occupations have sprung up from coast-to-coast-to-coast.<\/p>\n\n<p>They show no signs of letting up \u2014 even in the face of escalating police action. The federal and B.C. governments&#8217; apparent refusal to act in a way that would peacefully resolve this situation is distressing, since it is well within their reach.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Escalating solidarity events and police action<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Tonight our team went down to the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Tyendinaga?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Tyendinaga<\/a> rail blockade to bear witness as OPP moved in to forcibly remove &amp; arrest peaceful protectors.<br><br>This is the moment the first train passed.<br><br>This has only fuelled <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/WetsuwetenSolidarity?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#WetsuwetenSolidarity<\/a> actions across the country. Keep supporting \u270a <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/wr2Og8Kvqm\">pic.twitter.com\/wr2Og8Kvqm<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Greenpeace Canada (@GreenpeaceCA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GreenpeaceCA\/status\/1232152068288393217?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 25, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script> \n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p>Yesterday, Ontario Provincial Police carried out arrests at the Mohawk -led <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/canada\/2020\/02\/24\/rail-blockade-by-tyendinaga-mohawk-remains-after-police-deadline-passes.html\">Tyendinaga solidarity blockade<\/a>. Indigenous leaders have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ottawamatters.com\/national-news\/indigenous-leaders-condemn-use-of-force-by-police-to-clear-blockade-in-ontario-2113571\">condemned<\/a> the use of force by police.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cWe cannot state strongly enough our extreme disappointment in the absolute lack of good faith shown by a prime minister who continually expresses his government\u2019s priority is improving its relationship with Indigenous peoples,\u201d said the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kahnawake.com\/news\/pr\/pr02242020c.pdf\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Members of Greenpeace Canada\u2019s staff were on the ground, acting as legal observers and providing support. We\u2019re also encouraging our supporters to take action in solidarity, on the ground or online. <a href=\"https:\/\/act.greenpeace.org\/page\/55944\/data\"><strong>All of us who are settlers on this land need to raise our voices to speak up for Indigenous rights. Take action against injustice by calling Prime Minister Trudeau right now.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n<p>Police action against the Tyendinaga blockade escalated after Prime Minister Trudeau <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/article-barricades-at-rail-crossings-must-now-come-down-trudeau-says\/\">ordered the barricades down and implied<\/a> that the Wet\u2019suwet\u2019en refused to come to the table. This is quite a concerning omission of a number of important facts in the public interest, considering the Wet\u2019suwet\u2019en have made their very reasonable demands public and clear.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what they are asking for:<\/p>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>RCMP detachment to leave their territory and to cease <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2020\/02\/canada-tipping-point-wet-land-dispute-200221164735909.html\">patrols<\/a> into their lands.&nbsp;<\/li><li>All Coastal GasLink activities cease within Wet\u2019suwet\u2019en territory so political talks can proceed.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>We <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/act.greenpeace.org\/page\/55944\"><strong>call on Prime Minister Trudeau<\/strong><\/a><strong> to meet Wet\u2019suwet\u2019en demands immediately<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Developing: police on scene at Gitxsan  solidarity rail blockade. The Gitxsan are historic allies and co-plaintiff in landmark Delgamuukw case. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/QmYQUWtMEn\">https:\/\/t.co\/QmYQUWtMEn<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Amber Bracken (@photobracken) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/photobracken\/status\/1232158099550523393?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 25, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script> \n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p>Late last night at a new blockade in B.C., witnesses say that police <a href=\"https:\/\/ricochet.media\/en\/2955\/rcmp-arrest-two-hereditary-chiefs-at-gitxsan-rail-blockade\">arrested<\/a> Gitxsan hereditary chiefs Norman Stevens (Spookw) and Yvonne Lattie (Gwinitxw) on their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/story\/28856\/what-you-might-not-know-about-indigenous-law-and-the-raids-on-wetsuweten\/\">unceded<\/a> land. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ricochet_en\/status\/1232144034690424832?s=20\">Independent media also reported <\/a>restricted access to the site.<\/p>\n\n<p>Arresting the leaders of another Nation (on their unceded territory, no less) is certainly no road to peace or reconciliation. This is especially so in this case, since the Gitxan people <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/story\/28856\/what-you-might-not-know-about-indigenous-law-and-the-raids-on-wetsuweten\/\">are part of a landmark Supreme Court ruling<\/a> which recognized the land title rights of hereditary chiefs.<\/p>\n\n<p>The harder Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tries to strong-arm an end to the protests, the more determined people become to bear witness to injustice against the Wet\u2019suwet\u2019en people. Reports estimate 11 new solidarity protests, including in <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/6590842\/hamilton-rail-blockade\/\">Hamilton<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/6590701\/wetsuweten-blockade-port-vancouver-violation-injunction\/\">Vancouver and Victoria<\/a> and more have sprung up since the actions in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/canada\/2020\/02\/24\/rail-blockade-by-tyendinaga-mohawk-remains-after-police-deadline-passes.html\">Tyendinaga<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Prime Minister Trudeau and B.C. Premier Horgan <em>can<\/em><\/strong><strong> resolve this crisis (<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/act.greenpeace.org\/page\/55944\"><strong>phone the Prime Minister today<\/strong><\/a><strong>)\u2026<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Tyendinaga have been clear about what will bring the camps down: the RCMP off Wet&#39;suwet&#39;en territory. Since CGL&#39;s environmental assessment prevents building for at least 30 days, this would be a great time to do that. Or, you know, for Trudeau to talk to them at all.<br><br>Instead: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/6c0tWyCNj2\">https:\/\/t.co\/6c0tWyCNj2<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Alicia Elliott &#8211; AND THEN SHE FELL out now! (@WordsandGuitar) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WordsandGuitar\/status\/1231755424019423232?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 24, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p>The Wet\u2019suwet\u2019en hereditary chiefs are the rightful title holders of the land through which the Coastal Gaslink pipeline intends to be constructed (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/story\/28856\/what-you-might-not-know-about-indigenous-law-and-the-raids-on-wetsuweten\/\">more on this here<\/a>).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Given that the builders of Coastal Gaslink have been <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/6582688\/coastal-gaslink-environment-certificate\/\">ordered<\/a> to go back to consultations with Indigenous communities and were issued a 30-day stop work order, there is no clear reason for the RCMP to enforce the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/article-rcmp-poised-to-enforce-injunction-order-against-coastal-gaslink\/\">injunction<\/a> granted to the company by B.C. courts.<\/p>\n\n<p>This should have been a graceful way out for Prime Minister Trudeau and Premier Horgan to meet the Wet&#8217;suwet&#8217;en hereditary chiefs&#8217; reasonable demands for RCMP to be off their territory so that peaceful talks could resume without duress.<\/p>\n\n<p>So, why aren\u2019t Canadian leaders taking this very straightforward path to pursuing peace?<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2026 instead, Canada has reacted with colonial violence.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Calls for vigilante actions against Wet\u2019suwet\u2019en blockades are growing in far-right circles. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VestsCanada?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@VestsCanada<\/a> is documenting the calls to violence and murder.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/qobeY3pYGN\">https:\/\/t.co\/qobeY3pYGN<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Canadian Anti-Hate Network (@antihateca) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/antihateca\/status\/1230649157611872256?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 21, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script> \n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p>Prime Minister Trudeau promised a nation-to-nation relationship with Indigenous Peoples. Instead, when the situation got tough, he issued orders, ignored reconciliation and refused to pursue the diplomatic tenacity warranted to maintain a true nation-to-nation relationship.<\/p>\n\n<p>As settlers on Indigenous land, we have a responsibility to talk about and push for an end of&nbsp; colonial violence. The collection of relationships, systems and processes that do violence to the land and Indigenous Peoples is not a thing of the past.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>VICE has reported that Indigenous Peoples have experienced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_ca\/article\/n7jdyw\/indigenous-peoples-report-racism-surge-as-wetsuweten-rail-blockades-grow\">surge of racism<\/a> since the Wet\u2019suwet\u2019en crisis began. The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women, for instance, has highlighted the ongoing effects of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/aptnnews.ca\/2019\/06\/27\/un-report-highlights-systemic-violence-against-indigenous-women-supports-mmiwg-inquiry-findings\/\">gendered colonization<\/a>\u201d on Indigenous women.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>We certainly see colonial violence continue in police tactics. The RCMP were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/dec\/20\/canada-indigenous-land-defenders-police-documents\">reportedly prepared to use lethal force<\/a> against peaceful Wet\u2019suwet\u2019en Land Defenders, with officers being instructed to \u201cuse as much violence toward the gate as you want\u201d, referring to the gate of the camps Land Defenders erected.&nbsp; As it turned out, the raids against the Wet\u2019suwet\u2019en earlier this month were carried out by heavily armed RCMP tactical teams, complete with assault rifles, helicopters, heavy equipment and K-9 units.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p><em>\u201cIn our experience, since first contact, RCMP have been created by the federal government to dispossess Indigenous peoples of their lands \u2026 They have proven [that] through their harassment of my people to support Coastal GasLink in invading our territories,\u201d<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/dec\/20\/canada-indigenous-land-defenders-police-documents\">said Unist\u2019ot\u2019en spokesperson Freda Huson<\/a> on the long history of colonial violence in Canada.<\/p>\n\n<p>Plus, the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination <a href=\"https:\/\/thenarwhal.ca\/what-cost-are-human-rights-worth-un-calls-for-immediate-rcmp-withdrawal-in-wetsuweten-standoff\/\">called on Canadian officials<\/a> to immediately suspend work on the Coastal GasLink pipeline due to the lack of free, prior and informed consent, as required by the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/development\/desa\/indigenouspeoples\/declaration-on-the-rights-of-indigenous-peoples.html\"> UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples<\/a> (to which Canada is a signatory).<\/p>\n\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/thenarwhal.ca\/what-cost-are-human-rights-worth-un-calls-for-immediate-rcmp-withdrawal-in-wetsuweten-standoff\/\"><em>The Narwhal <\/em>reports<\/a>,<em> \u201cin a two-page decision statement, the committee said it is alarmed by the escalating threat of violence against Indigenous peoples in B.C. and disturbed by the \u2018forced removal, disproportionate use of force, harassment and intimidation by law enforcement officials against Indigenous peoples who peacefully oppose large-scale development projects\u2019 on their traditional territories.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p>Outright acts of hate and violence are connected to institutions that continue to show Canadians that there are limited consequences for devaluing the lives and rights of Indigenous Peoples. This has to stop. These systems have to be dismantled and they won\u2019t change themselves.
