This case is as much about the right to eat as the right of Indigenous communities right to consult on energy projects that impact their lands and waters.<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<span>The consortium of oil companies they\u2019re taking on includes: Petroleum Geo-Services Inc., Multi Klient Invest AS, and TGS-Nopec Geophysical Company ASA. The respondents <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nunatsiaqonline.ca\/stories\/article\/65674seismic_companies_postpone_nunavut_blasting_plan_for_a_third_time\/\"><span>have agreed<\/span><\/a><span> to suspend blasting for 2017 and until the ruling has been delivered. Clyde River\u2019s court challenge has successfully delayed seismic blasting for the past three years.<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<span>The National Energy Board and Attorney General of Canada are also named as a Party in this case.<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<span>This case is expected to clarify what will satisfy the government\u2019s \u201cduty to consult\u201d with Indigenous communities. Among \u00a0the binding legal and human rights codes that apply are <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/laws-lois.justice.gc.ca\/eng\/Const\/page-16.html\"><span>section 35<\/span><\/a><span> of the Canadian Constitution on Aboriginal and Treaty Rights and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2018\/06\/DRIPS_en.pdf\"><span>Article 32<\/span><\/a><span> of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<span>Clyde River has undertaken a judicial review at the Federal Court of Appeal in 2015. The cases of Clyde River and the Chippewas are distinct. However, because both cases relate to the responsibility to consult, the Court agreed to hear the two cases together.<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>About Seismic Blasting<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<span>Seismic blasts are loud. Up to, and sometimes over, 260 decibels underwater, which is eight times louder than a jet engine heard 50 metres away on land.<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<span>Sounds at this level can burst human ear drums (the human threshold of pain is 125 dB and eardrum rapture could happen around 140-150 dB), as well as cause whales to experience temporary or permanent hearing loss, which \u2014 because they rely on echolocation \u2014 impacts nearly every aspect of their daily activities: navigating, communicating, searching for food, etc.<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<span>Roughly 80-90% of the world\u2019s narwhals live in Baffin Bay and Davis Strait \u2014 the exact area where companies want to blast through waters in search of oil. Whales like beluga, narwhal and bowhead can be harmed or killed by these destructive blasts.<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>About the Campaign<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<span>Greenpeace is supporting the community of Clyde River by contributing to some of its legal costs, as well as helping bring its case to national and international attention. Greenpeace \u00a0also stands in solidarity with the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation. In August 2016, we <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2018\/06\/Greenpeace_ship_sailing_to_CanadianArctic-with-solar-panels-scientists-and-Inuit-allies-onboard.pdf\"><span>sailed to Clyde River<\/span><\/a><span> to support the community\u2019s installation of a solar array and to raise awareness of its legal battle.<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<span>Just shy of 440,000 people around the world signed \u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/arctic-home.greenpeace.org\/en-ca\/\"><span>petition<\/span><\/a><span>s to stop seismic blasting and stand with Clyde River.<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<span>Many people from around the world took <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/greenpeace_canada\/albums\/72157676717270545\"><span>\u201cnoise complaint\u201d photos<\/span><\/a><span> and shared them over social media, directing them to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who has failed to make good on promises to implement UNDRIP and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-ca\/video\/news\/trudeau-governments-grant-permits-communities-grant-permission\/vi-BBqd8hl\"><span>his assertion<\/span><\/a><span> that \u201cgovernments grant permits, communities grant permission\u201d (March 2016).<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<span>The \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/greenpeace.canada\/videos\/10154542603424961\/\"><span>Right to Eat<\/span><\/a><span>\u201d video featuring community leader and former mayor of Clyde River, Jerry Natanine, and writer and Oscar-winning actor, Emma Thompson, was viewed almost one million times by people from Australia to Mexico, Quebec to Taiwan.<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<span>Food prices are exceptionally high in Nunavut and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/north\/food-insecurity-reaches-record-level-nunavut-northwest-territories-1.3523105\"><span>60% of children<\/span><\/a><span> there live in food insecure households, making <\/span><span>country food <\/span><span>caught on land or in water important for having enough to eat. In fact, access to culturally appropriate food is a fundamental part of food sovereignty. Country food and locally foraged edible plants are the most sustainable and healthy source of food for many Inuit.<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<span>Hundreds of people participated in a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/north\/supreme-court-indigenous-duty-to-consult-clyde-river-seismic-testing-1.3873059\"><span>solidarity rally<\/span><\/a><span> for Clyde River and the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation when their cases were heard at the Supreme Court on November 30th, 2016.<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<span>20 celebrities voiced their support on social media or <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/north\/celebrities-activists-seismic-testing-clyde-river-1.3871625\"><span>in this video<\/span><\/a><span>, including Emma Thompson, YouTubers Mitchell Moffit and Gregory Brown of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CrRDtZp96jw\"><span>ASAPScience<\/span><\/a><span>, Naomi Klein, Leonardo Dicaprio, John Oliver, Oprah, and Rachel McAdams.<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<span>Clyde River supporters have also helped <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pg\/greenpeace.canada\/videos\/?ref=page_internal\"><span>donate solar panels<\/span><\/a><span> to the community, which have been successfully installed on its community hall.
