The mother Orca however refused to leave her baby behind and instead carried its body with her. She pushed it by herself for days.<\/p>\n<p>When she started falling behind the rest of the pod \u2014 the pod <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/radio\/asithappens\/as-it-happens-tuesday-edition-1.4768344\/orcas-now-appear-to-be-taking-turns-floating-dead-calf-in-apparent-mourning-ritual-1.4768349\">joined her in pushing and supporting the infant\u2019s body<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a truly inspiring and heartbreaking story &#8211; watching another species mourning its loss in such a dramatic manner. It speaks to the deep love that a mother has for her child, and the importance of a community especially in a time of grieving.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, while we all try to deal with this immediate loss, the future of the pod is also dire.<\/p>\n<p><b>This population of orcas is on the edge of extinction. <\/b>There are only 75 Southern resident orcas left in existence. Another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/seattle-news\/environment\/noaa-plans-outside-the-box-response-to-save-j-pod-orca-who-may-have-just-days-to-live\/\">adolescent has already been observed as extremely emaciated<\/a> and because of dwindling food supplies, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/news\/2016\/02\/standard-ship-noise-may-interfere-orca-communication\">increased marine traffic<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca\/species-especes\/profiles-profils\/killerWhalesouth-PAC-NE-epaulardsud-eng.html\">entire population is at risk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Add to this already bleak situation the pipeline <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/canada\/2018\/05\/29\/justin-trudeaus-45-billion-trans-mountain-pipeline-purchase-met-with-a-storm-of-criticism.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Canada\u2019s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau just pledged to buy for $4.5 billion<\/a> &#8211; the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion (TMX). TMX is a massive new tar sands pipeline that would bring a very toxic substance called bitumen from Alberta, Canada to British Columbia and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2016\/nov\/16\/canada-oil-pipeline-expansion-killer-whales-kinder-morgan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">right through the heart of the whales&#8217; habitat<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3818\" style=\"width: 1090px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3818\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3818\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2018\/08\/e25763fc-75-orcas.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2018\/08\/e25763fc-75-orcas.png 1080w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2018\/08\/e25763fc-75-orcas-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2018\/08\/e25763fc-75-orcas-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2018\/08\/e25763fc-75-orcas-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2018\/08\/e25763fc-75-orcas-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2018\/08\/e25763fc-75-orcas-340x340.png 340w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3818\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Only 75 Southern Resident Orcas remain.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>One of the reasons these orcas are struggling to survive is because the Chinook salmon they depend on for food <a href=\"http:\/\/sportfishing.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/SRKW-Discussion-Paper-Final-Feb-15-2018.pdf\">are in decline<\/a>. <b>Without enough salmon to eat, the orcas are literally starving to death.<\/b> They\u2019re severely emaciated \u2014 observers can even see the ribs of some of the whales.<\/p>\n<p>The TMX pipeline would cross over 1300 streams and rivers on its way to the ocean and would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raincoast.org\/reports\/salmon-oil-pipeline\/\">put this key food supply even further at risk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>If it goes ahead, the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion could also turn the <\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/greenpeace.org\/usa\/reports\/tanker-superhighway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>home of the 75 remaining orcas into a tar sands tanker superhighway<\/b><\/a><b> &#8211; bringing over 400 tankers through their critical habitat every year. <\/b><\/p>\n<p>The noise from a sevenfold increase in tanker traffic may <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raincoast.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/RCF-SRKW-acoustics-NEB.pdf\">interfere with the orca\u2019s<\/a> ability to find what little food there is left to eat. It will put them at greater risk of being struck by a tanker. And a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raincoast.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Ch-7-The-Game-of-Risk.pdf\">catastrophic oil spill<\/a> could be the final nail in their coffin <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.com\/2016\/01\/160126-Exxon-Valdez-oil-spill-killer-whales-Chugach-transients\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">as the Exxon Valdez spill devastated other orca pods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>These whales can\u2019t just move on to another area.
