More than<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/canada\/2018\/07\/18\/89-deaths-now-linked-to-heat-wave-in-quebec.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">90 people had died<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to extreme heat waves in Quebec.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-weather-japan-heatwave\/japan-heat-wave-deaths-climb-to-80-as-authorities-weigh-preventive-measures-idUSKBN1KE1A4\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 80 in Japan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/daily\/intelligencer\/2018\/07\/a-global-heat-wave-has-set-the-arctic-circle-on-fire.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arctic circle was on fire<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As I write this, a fire, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2176208-californias-worst-wildfire-in-history-is-now-the-size-of-los-angeles\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the size of Los Angeles,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is burning out of control in California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s hard to know what to think (or feel) when I read pronouncements like that. Part of me feels hopeless and despair about a planet so clearly out of control. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up until recently newspaper headlines have often focussed on reporting on shortages of air conditioners due to hotter weather or overcrowded public pools rather than honing in on one of the biggest underlying causes of these extreme weather events: climate change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But as demonstrated with this <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/early\/2018\/07\/31\/1810141115\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and among other news outlets I\u2019ve started to notice a slight shift. More and more news <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2018\/08\/01\/magazine\/climate-change-losing-earth.html?emc=edit_ma_20180801&amp;nl=magazine&amp;nlid=7625342720180801&amp;te=1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">outlets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are connecting the dots and reporting the facts, our climate is rapidly changing and it\u2019s not natural weather cycles causing this shift, it\u2019s people, governments, corporations that are to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2018\/aug\/14\/extreme-temperatures-especially-likely-for-next-four-years\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blame<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After decades of knowing what is to come our governments have delayed action, accelerated the problem, and wasted away one of the most precious of things &#8211; time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The recent New York Times Magazine <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2018\/08\/01\/magazine\/climate-change-losing-earth.html?emc=edit_ma_20180801&amp;nl=magazine&amp;nlid=7625342720180801&amp;te=1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feature<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reports, what we already know, if we had acted back then the lifting would have been smaller, the disruption less, and countless numbers of people, communities, and animals might have been saved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, as fires burn around the Arctic, and temperatures soar around the world, we watch as our &#8216;new normal&#8217; has become just that &#8216;normal.&#8217; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of my colleagues have said that we shouldn&#8217;t circulate this type of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/early\/2018\/07\/31\/1810141115\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because it makes one feel a little hopeless. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But after a moment of despair, I remember what a friend once told me almost a decade ago; you can&#8217;t do everything. It took me a long time to learn that lesson but it&#8217;s a valuable one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Because after all it&#8217;s not up to me, one person, or one organization, to change the world. It&#8217;s a collective journey we are on and millions of collective actions can right this ship.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For me, and working at Greenpeace, a big part of that is trying to stand up to the companies and governments that put us in this place &#8211; the ones that endangered our collective future because they wanted money or votes &#8211; and force them to take the actions science demands and implement the solutions that lead us out of the problem <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/act.greenpeace.org\/page\/23415\/action\/1?locale=en-US\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not deeper into it<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I remember that, and remember that millions of people around the world are acting, just like I am, the problems don&#8217;t seem so unbeatable and the despair doesn&#8217;t seem so all consuming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nelson Mandela once said, <strong>&#8220;It always seems impossible until it\u2019s done.&#8221;<\/strong> I always try to remember that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If enough of us take this despair and focus it I believe we can move mountains again.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Things you can do right now:<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Climate change is a global problem that will take coordination from governments around the world, but here are a few things you can do to make a difference:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pressure our government to deliver on the Canada\u2019s legally binding climate change commitments, which means not building any new fossil fuel projects that contribute more emissions and make the problem worse. One immediate way to act is to tell Prime Minister Trudeau not to buy the TransMountain tar sands pipeline. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/act.greenpeace.org\/page\/23415\/action\/1?locale=en-US\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sign the petition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> here.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speak to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ourcommons.ca\/parliamentarians\/en\/constituencies\/FindMP\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your MP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about the importance of acting on climate change and doing more to combat this growing crisis.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stand up for climate refugees: people around the world \u2013 often in the world\u2019s poorest regions \u2013 have already been displaced because of the effects of climate change. Some brilliant organisations like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ejfoundation.org\/what-we-do\/climate\/protecting-climate-refugees\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental Justice Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are working to raise their profile.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2017\/jan\/19\/how-to-reduce-carbon-footprint\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">changes you can make to reduce the amount of carbon you use<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like eating less meat, flying less, or switching to LED lights at home. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Switch to a renewable energy provider (check your local provider listings) \u2013 they\u2019re competitively priced and climate friendly or work to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cansia.ca\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">put some solar panels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on your home, business, or community roof.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/riseforclimate.org\/\">Sign-up<\/a> to participate in this global day of action to demand action on climate change.
