While many people are struggling to pay bills, major grocery store owners have raked in millions in profits<strong>.<\/strong> So when major supermarkets decided to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/financialpost.com\/news\/retail-marketing\/sobeys-parent-company-raises-quarterly-dividend-after-cutting-employee-hazard-pay\" target=\"_blank\">cut the $2-an-hour pay bump<\/a> (called \u201cHero Pay\u201d or \u201cPandemic Premiums\u201d) to frontline workers, it raised more than one eyebrow.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Following widespread public outrage,executives of Loblaw Companies Ltd., Metro Inc. and Empire Company Ltd. have been <\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ourcommons.ca\/Committees\/en\/INDU\/StudyActivity?studyActivityId=10894621\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>summoned to appear before a Parliamentary committee<\/strong><\/a><strong> today to explain the <\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-grocery-chain-executives-to-be-called-to-testify-on-pay-cuts-for-store\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>apparently coordinated pay cuts<\/strong><\/a><strong>. <\/strong>As Liberal MP Nate Erskine-Smith, who initiated the motion for these hearings, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/politics\/why-did-grocery-store-execs-cut-pandemic-pay-mps-invite-them-to-explain-1.4990450\" target=\"_blank\">put it<\/a>, \u201cTo see record profits and grocery store executives slash pandemic pay in the middle of pandemic, it doesn\u2019t sit right.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"has-orange-hover-color has-text-color has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">Contact your MP and tell them you support a wealth tax for the rich and a living wage for employees<\/h4>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons aligncenter is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-cta\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-text-color has-background\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/act.gp\/38T1wNH&amp;sa=D&amp;ust=1594339962800000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHksbYdUDVVsgGlMGk7ejXh6W6CDg\" style=\"background-color:#f36d3a;color:#ffffff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>EMAIL YOUR MP<\/strong><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>Many employees along with their unions have been hurt by this decision, which has been <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-grocery-chain-executives-to-be-called-to-testify-on-pay-cuts-for-store\/\" target=\"_blank\">called unjustified<\/a>. A <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rankandfile.ca\/better-pay-not-heroes\/\" target=\"_blank\">letter from a grocery store worker<\/a> from Kingston Ontario, says it best: \u201cI get paid minimum wage and most of my earnings go towards paying rent. [&#8230;] We don\u2019t want to be labelled as \u2018heroes\u2019. All we need is a better pay \u2013 during all times. We need some protection from getting exposed at work and essential workers deserve a better life too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>These grocery store giants are justifying their decision by saying things have now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/business\/2020\/06\/11\/loblaw-ends-covid-19-wage-premium-for-front-line-workers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">normalized<\/a>. But even if businesses are reopening their doors, the pandemic is not over. If anything, this pandemic has exposed long-standing injustices and brought about a greater awareness of income inequality and health risks faced by retail workers.<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace has long been pushing grocery store retailers like Loblaw, Sobeys, Metro and Save-on-Foods to take responsibility for the environmental impact of what\u2019s on their shelves, from ensuring they\u2019re stocking <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/story\/5346\/and-the-top-5-plastic-polluters-are\/\" target=\"_blank\">sustainably caught seafood<\/a>, dealing with their <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/story\/27283\/attention-canadas-supermarket-chains-will-you-join-the-reuse-revolution\/\" target=\"_blank\">plastic packaging problem<\/a>, to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/act\/staying-food-secure-during-the-covid-19-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\">reducing food waste<\/a>. <strong>Let\u2019s stand with frontline workers to ensure that grocery stores, their investors and wealthy owners clean up their act <\/strong>and take responsibility for the wellbeing of <em>who<\/em>\u2019s stocking their shelves, too. <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Read on to learn more.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter aligncenter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Dozens of grocery store workers have contracted the coronavirus in Canada <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/zBA3X5yJMB\">https:\/\/t.co\/zBA3X5yJMB<\/a><\/p>&mdash; While the company has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-06-12\/a-supermarket-billionaire-steps-into-trouble-over-pandemic-wages\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">expressed a belief<\/a> in a \u201cprogressive minimum wage\u201d and would support \u201cany government-led effort to establish a living wage\u201d, the proof is in the pudding, and this seems to try to pass the buck \u2014 after all, nothing is stopping them from paying employees a living wage. Others among Canada\u2019s wealthy elite have interests in the grocery sector, such as the Sobeys family, several members of whom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.empireco.ca\/en\/governance\/board-of-directors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sit on the board<\/a> of Empire Co. (which owns Sobeys, Safe-ways, FreshCo, IGA, and Rachelle B\u00e9ry). Back in 2018, their wealth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadianbusiness.com\/lists-and-rankings\/richest-people\/rich-100-sobey-family\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">was valued<\/a> at $2.88 billion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Sobeys, along with Loblaws, Metro and other retailers were also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/canada\/class-action-authorized-against-alleged-nationwide-cartel-that-fixed-bread-prices-1.4740203#:~:text=On%20Thursday%2C%20Quebec%20Superior%20Court,bread%20across%20Canada%20since%202001.&amp;text=19%2C%202019%20%2D%2D%20the%20date%20the%20suit%20was%20authorized%20in%20court.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">accused of collusion<\/a>, allegedly fixing the price of bread for 14 years, starting back in 2001 &#8211; violating Canada\u2019s competition laws and increasing the price of bread, a food staple for many people. To fix our planet\u2019s climate and biodiversity crises, we need to change the rules of the system that have allowed wealthy elites to prioritize profits over the relationships we have with each other and with nature.<\/p>\n\n<p>No one should be allowed to unfairly amass wealth and influence by undercutting customers, workers or the planet we depend on \u2014 but if we don\u2019t take action now, that\u2019s exactly what\u2019s going to keep happening. A <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbo-dpb.gc.ca\/en\/blog\/news\/RP-2021-007-S--estimating-top-tail-family-wealth-distribution-in-canada--estimation-queue-superieure-distribution-patrimoine-familial-au-canada\" target=\"_blank\">new report released last month<\/a> by the federal government shows that <strong>wealth concentration in Canada is worse than we thought<\/strong>: the top 1% of families own a quarter of this country\u2019s wealth. Meanwhile, the middle-class own another quarter and the poorest 40% own a paltry 1.2%.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Our economic system is deeply broken. <\/strong>The fact that COVID-19 exposed it so unflinchingly gives us a chance to reset.&nbsp; That\u2019s why Greenpeace is advocating for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/story\/40377\/what-exactly-is-system-change-and-how-can-we-build-back-better-from-covid-19\/?_thumbnail_id=37931\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">systems change<\/a>: ensuring that the Trudeau government\u2019s plans for the post-pandemic economic recovery (expected this fall) aim to fix the problems of inequality, injustice and environmental crisis right at the roots.<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p><strong>A <\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbo-dpb.gc.ca\/en\/blog\/news\/RP-2021-017-M--net-wealth-tax-canadian-resident-economic-families--impot-patrimoine-net-familles-economiques-residant-au-canada\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>wealth tax<\/strong><\/a><strong> on the richest slices of society is one policy we support for bringing our society back into balance.<\/strong> A study released just last week, for example, found that such a tax could generate <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbo-dpb.gc.ca\/en\/blog\/news\/RP-2021-017-M--net-wealth-tax-canadian-resident-economic-families--impot-patrimoine-net-familles-economiques-residant-au-canada\" target=\"_blank\">$5.6 billion<\/a> in public funds, which could help support low-income households and help pay for a green and just recovery from the pandemic.
