Greenpeace calls for a green stimulus for covid-19!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>Toronto, Canada \u2013 French oil company Total has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.total.com\/media\/news\/short-term-price-revision-and-climate-ambition-total-announces-exceptional-8-b-asset\">written down<\/a> $7 billion in tar sands assets and plans to withdraw from Canada\u2019s biggest oil lobby group, the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP).<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>In response, Greenpeace Canada Senior Energy Strategist Keith Stewart, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cTotal\u2019s decision to write down their tar sands assets and quit Canada\u2019s biggest oil lobby group for its opposition to action on climate change underscores the urgency of ensuring that covid-19 stimulus plans grow a green economy and transition workers securely into it. As the world transitions away from fossil fuels, starting with the most polluting sources, the tar sands are hemorrhaging investors. It&#8217;s time we heard more from the federal Liberals on their progress toward the green stimulus plans they promised Canadians early on in the pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>This is the second big announcement this week regarding major corporations withdrawing support from the Alberta tar sands. On Monday, Deutsche Bank <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/calgary\/deutsche-bank-coal-oilsands-invest-carbon-energy-fracking-1.5664632\">announced<\/a> that it won\u2019t financially back any new tar sands projects. CAPP has been<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/business\/shell-capp-climate-1.5081036\"> increasingly at odds<\/a> with global oil majors, who are talking about decarbonization.
