Tell Freeland and Trudeau to make a Green and Just Recovery a $$$ reality"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Our government <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnnbloomberg.ca\/freeland-trudeau-push-for-green-recovery-as-finance-portfolio-changes-hands-1.1482039\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>said last month<\/strong><\/a><strong> that a green and just recovery will be their number one priority when Parliament resumes this fall. Let&#8217;s hold them to it. <\/strong>We don\u2019t have a moment to lose <strong>\u2014 <\/strong>we know big polluters have been lobbying federal officials to ask for bailouts and rollbacks of environmental rules.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Like Prime Minister Trudeau, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland holds a lot of power when it comes to determining which way the COVID-19 recovery steers our country. We are calling on both of them to <a href=\"https:\/\/climateactionnetwork.ca\/2020\/05\/25\/breaking-progressives-release-principles-for-a-just-recovery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prioritize health, better social safety nets and the needs of workers<\/a> alongside essential investments that protect nature and build resilience to future crises. This means they must fully commit to:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A fair transition to a sustainable low-carbon economy<\/li><li>Protecting and restoring of land, freshwater, and ocean ecosystems along with the wildlife that call these places home<\/li><li>Ending single-use plastics in favour of building a circular economy<\/li><li>Replacing toxic chemicals used in agricultural, consumer goods and manufacturing with safer alternatives&nbsp;<\/li><li>Developing accessible, affordable and healthy communities and transportation networks<\/li><li>Prioritizing social and racial justice, economic equity, and well-being, in partnership with Indigenous Peoples and the communities most exposed to environmental harm<\/li><\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build a more just, sustainable, and healthy Canada \u2014 a Canada that works for everyone, not just a wealthy few. But big polluters are pushing the federal government to funnel recovery spending into their pockets instead. As such, any economic recovery plan must ensure a <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/climateactionnetwork.ca\/2020\/05\/25\/breaking-progressives-release-principles-for-a-just-recovery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Just Recovery<\/em><\/a><em>, including these&nbsp; key principles for a green recovery:<\/em><\/p>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>A fair transition to a sustainable low-carbon economy<\/em><\/li><li><em>Protecting and restoring of land, freshwater, and ocean ecosystems along with the wildlife that call these places home<\/em><\/li><li><em>Ending single-use plastics in favour of building a circular economy<\/em><\/li><li><em>Replacing toxic chemicals used in agricultural, consumer goods and manufacturing with safer alternatives&nbsp;<\/em><\/li><li><em>Developing accessible, affordable and healthy communities and transportation networks<\/em><\/li><li><em>Prioritizing social and racial justice, economic equity, and well-being, in partnership with Indigenous Peoples and the communities most exposed to environmental harm.<\/em><\/li><\/ol>\n\n<p><em>Polling shows that <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipsos.com\/en-ca\/news-and-polls\/Two-Thirds-Of-Canadians-Think--In-The-Long-Term-Climate-Change-Is-As-Serious-Of-A-Problem-As-Coronavirus\"><em>61% of Canadians<\/em><\/a><em> want governments to prioritize climate action in their response to the pandemic. Already,&nbsp; we are far, far behind many other countries taking the opportunity the COVID-19 recovery presents to shape a better world \u2014 from the green agendas in the European Union and South Korea to the labour reforms being explored in New Zealand.<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p><em>This is your chance to make your campaign slogan a reality and Choose Forward \u2014 make history by transforming Canada to be fairer, kinder, greener.
