{"id":43418,"date":"2020-10-01T11:52:37","date_gmt":"2020-10-01T15:52:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/?p=43418"},"modified":"2020-10-01T14:52:49","modified_gmt":"2020-10-01T18:52:49","slug":"over-25000-canadians-say-no-to-canadas-growing-role-in-amazon-rainforest-destruction-where-fires-increased-by-12-4-in-one-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/press-release\/43418\/over-25000-canadians-say-no-to-canadas-growing-role-in-amazon-rainforest-destruction-where-fires-increased-by-12-4-in-one-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Over 25,000 Canadians say NO to Canada\u2019s growing role in Amazon rainforest destruction where fires increased by 12.4% in one year."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Ottawa \u2013<\/strong> Today Greenpeace Canada brought a message to Parliament Hill from <a href=\"https:\/\/act.greenpeace.org\/page\/67506\/petition\/1?locale=en&amp;utm_campaign=overconsumption&amp;campaign_project=amazon&amp;utm_source=p4&amp;utm_medium=banner&amp;utm_term=sign&amp;utm_content=link&amp;content_specific=amazonmercosur.petition.homepage.banner&amp;ea.tracking.id=en_overconsumption_amazon_p4_banner_20200917_sign_link_amazonmercosur.petition.homepage.banner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">over 25,000 <\/a>Canadians: the Federal government cannot proceed with a trade deal that would contribute to the destruction of the Amazon rainforest.<\/p>\n\n<p>Satellite images show that 2020 is the worst fire season in a decade in the Amazon, with new data released today showing a <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/pmn\/news-pmn\/disaster-pmn\/fires-in-brazils-amazon-the-worst-in-a-decade-data-shows\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">12.4% increase<\/a> in fires compared to last year [1].&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Yet the federal government remains in trade negotiations with Brazil on a deal projected to drastically increase the country\u2019s meat exports to Canada \u2013 opening a market to the beef products that are lead driver of the Amazon fires.[2]<\/p>\n\n<p>Countries like France and Germany have already expressed concern with concluding a trade deal with Mercosur at this time, citing Amazon deforestation and the Brazilian government\u2019s environmental policies.[3] The Liberal government has failed to voice similar concerns, and Foreign Affairs Minister Fran\u00e7ois-Philippe Champagne\u2019s office has remained silent to thousands of messages from Canadians and Greenpeace Canada\u2019s request to meet.<\/p>\n\n<p>Indigenous leaders in Brazil are warning that the current situation amounts to an existential threat to their survival.[4] Scientists warn that Amazon deforestation is approaching a tipping point beyond which rainforest will not recover.[5]<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Reykia Fick, Nature &amp; Food Campaigner at Greenpeace Canada said:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cOur government cannot pledge to be a leader for nature while pursuing a trade deal that would make Canada complicit in the destruction of one of the world\u2019s most important biodiversity hotspots.
