A new poll commissioned by Greenpeace Canada<\/a> has revealed that 62% of Canadians believe \u201cnow is the right time\u201d for the federal government to address long-standing problems like inequality, climate change and racism.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

All of this could be kick-started by investing in and implementing a green and just recovery<\/strong> from COVID-19 \u2014 and our elected representatives know<\/em> it<\/em>. Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland has said herself<\/a> that the recovery from the pandemic must be equitable and green, and the speech from the throne was overflowing with promises to protect society\u2019s most vulnerable, while addressing climate change.<\/p>\n\n

But despite the many promises, the same poll shows<\/a> most Canadians are not confident that Justin Trudeau\u2019s government will deliver on the plans and priorities laid out last month. We\u2019re here to make sure they follow through – but we need your help, and your voice.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

We\u2019re here to tell them oil is over:<\/em><\/strong> the same year that the Teck Frontier mine project was cancelled<\/strong><\/a> <\/strong>thanks to people power (remember it\u2019s the actual investors that pulled the plug), our poll shows two-thirds of Canadians want the federal recovery to prioritize renewables<\/strong> over fossil fuels. At the same time, 87% of Canadians want the government to invest in jobs that protect nature and the environment.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

We\u2019re here to tell them that it\u2019s time to even the playing field with a wealth tax:<\/em><\/strong> <\/strong>COVID-19 has become an enabler for the ultra-rich, with Canada\u2019s top billionaires increasing their wealth by $37 billion since March alone (while cancelling the so-called \u2018Hero Pay\u2019 for their frontline workers). Meanwhile, millions of Canadians have lost their jobs, as economic uncertainty looms. No wonder 67% of poll respondents want the federal government to finance the economic recovery by taxing those who have disproportionately profited from the crisis.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

We\u2019re here to tell them that those who suffer the most at the hands of our failed system are the loudest proponents for change: <\/em><\/strong>those trapped on the lowest rungs of the economic ladder have been hardest hit by the COVID-19 crisis, while also being the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. It\u2019s not surprising that 78% of lower income households want to see investments in renewable energy and 64% believe it is important to prioritize jobs related to nature and the environment. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Canada\u2019s economic update is just weeks from today<\/strong>. This will be the moment where financing is secured and announced for the COVID-19 economic recovery. There is no time to waste if we want to see these promises backed by tangible $$$, to build a fairer, better Canada.<\/p>\n\n
