Try one of these eco-friendly options"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized caption-style-medium caption-alignment-center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/5c884841-real.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-45180\" width=\"900\" height=\"471\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Alongside <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/story\/27868\/never-buy-gift-paper-again-the-ultimate-guide-to-zero-waste-wrapping\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>zero waste wrapping<\/strong><\/a>, we can now add \u2018the great tree debate\u2019 to the list of viral Holiday eco-trends worth unpacking: <strong>which is more sustainable, a real tree or a fake tree<\/strong> (or as my daughter likes to call them, FAKEmas trees)?<\/p>\n\n<p>The truth is, they may both have their drawbacks and their benefits, according to the research that\u2019s been conducted on the environmental impacts of each.<\/p>\n\n<p>While we might think of<strong> real trees<\/strong> as more sustainable because they suck up carbon dioxide and are compostable at the end of their use, when you look at the big picture, things start to get more complicated. Christmas tree farms can displace biodiverse natural ecosystems and, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/ellipsos.ca\/lca-christmas-tree-natural-vs-artificial\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>according to research conducted by Ellipsos<\/strong><\/a>, there is some debate around whether trees absorb more carbon than they release in their first 20 years of life (Holiday trees are generally cut down in their teenage years, so don\u2019t reach their ultimate carbon absorbing <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/how-old-trees-help-climate-1.4252888\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>old-growth potential<\/strong><\/a>). Many commercial Christmas tree operations also use pesticides &#8211; some of which <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/bc.ctvnews.ca\/christmas-tree-pesticide-1.580276\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>are even banned for use in gardening.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n<p>And while <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.ca\/2018\/11\/13\/cut-your-own-christmas-tree-canada_a_23588695\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>getting a permit<\/strong><\/a> to chop down a tree in the Canadian wilderness sounds nostalgic, there may be repercussions for unsuspecting wildlife &#8211; like this northern saw-whet owl who <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/radio\/asithappens\/as-it-happens-thursday-edition-1.5808547\/tiny-owl-found-unharmed-in-rockefeller-tree-is-a-christmas-miracle-says-rehabilitator-1.5808659\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>went viral<\/strong><\/a> last month after the tree he was chillin\u2019 in got chopped and dragged from Oneonta to New York City. The owl was unharmed, but frankly this is not a death stare I\u2019m willing to mess with.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized caption-style-medium caption-alignment-center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/radio\/asithappens\/as-it-happens-thursday-edition-1.5808547\/tiny-owl-found-unharmed-in-rockefeller-tree-is-a-christmas-miracle-says-rehabilitator-1.5808659\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/a8c07cc5-screen-shot-2020-12-14-at-11.14.04-am.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-45185\" width=\"718\" height=\"409\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">death. stare. from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/radio\/asithappens\/as-it-happens-thursday-edition-1.5808547\/tiny-owl-found-unharmed-in-rockefeller-tree-is-a-christmas-miracle-says-rehabilitator-1.5808659\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CBC.com<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p><strong>Fake trees<\/strong>, on the other hand, are often made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/why-you-should-avoid-pvc-products-1881927242.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>one of the naughtiest plastics<\/strong><\/a> on the plastics list and pollutes across its entire lifespan, from production to end of life. Trees made from PVC are difficult to recycle and so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.queensu.ca\/gazette\/stories\/it-better-buy-real-christmas-tree-or-fake-one\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>end up going to landfill<\/strong><\/a> where they release more greenhouse gases and pollute ecosystems by leaching dangerous chemicals. They are also usually made in factories overseas and the GHG emissions associated with shipping increases their carbon footprint.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>For those wanting to escape the fake vs real dichotomy, here are some other eco-friendly options:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"diytree\"><strong>1) Make your own&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>Feeling crafty? Mix some creativity into the festivities this year and make your own tree out of upcycled materials (remember, the most sustainable item is the one that already exists. So the more reuse you can incorporate, the merrier for the planet!). Likewise, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/christmas-tree-rental-firms-battle-waste-1.857247\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Evergrow Christmas Trees in Burnaby<\/strong><\/a> will deliver the tree and then return it to the nursery so that families could potentially rent the same tree year after year until it&#8217;s ready to be planted.<\/p>\n\n<p>In Toronto, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/live-christmas-tree-1.3890181\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Evergreen Brickworks Garden Market<\/strong><\/a> let\u2019s you select a live potted tree to keep indoors over the holidays and then you plant it yourself in the spring. <a href=\"https:\/\/davidsuzuki.org\/queen-of-green\/eco-friendly-christmas-tree-ideas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Here\u2019s a handy guide<\/strong><\/a> on how to care for and plant your own tree.<\/p>\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/calgary\/calgary-rent-living-christmas-tree-1.3349758\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>FromTheGround Organic Gardens<\/strong><\/a> in Alberta gives you the choice: you can either get them to pick up the tree after the Holidays OR you can keep the tree and they\u2019ll come back in the spring and plant it for you.<\/p>\n\n<p>Know any other live-tree companies? So, if you can find a good quality one in the secondhand market and take good care of it with proper storage, it can continue its journey long after you\u2019re finished with it. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/story\/45076\/the-future-of-holiday-gifting-is-secondhand-but-we-can-start-right-now\/#secondhand\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Here\u2019s a guide for how to navigate the secondhand market during the Holidays. <\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4) Get a Norfolk Island pine<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>Are you a proud plant parent who enjoys taking care of your leafy friends?
