{"id":49255,"date":"2021-07-19T13:24:33","date_gmt":"2021-07-19T17:24:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/?p=49255"},"modified":"2021-12-06T06:22:49","modified_gmt":"2021-12-06T11:22:49","slug":"toronto-greenpeace-volunteers-take-to-tiktok-spreading-seeds-of-sustainability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/volunteer-blog\/49255\/toronto-greenpeace-volunteers-take-to-tiktok-spreading-seeds-of-sustainability\/","title":{"rendered":"Toronto Greenpeace Volunteers take to TikTok spreading seeds of sustainability"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Born of our shared frustration with plastic waste and our inability to gather<br>in person throughout the pandemic, the local Toronto group banded<br>together as digital warriors, taking to Instagram and TikTok rather than the<br>blue seas of our rainbow warrior predecessors.<br><br><strong>Our mission: spread green vibes and grow the tribe of environmentally<br>conscientious Torontonians.<\/strong><br><br>On April 22nd 2021 \u2014 Earth Day, GP volunteer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@greenpeacevolunteersto\/video\/6954014740909739269?lang=en&amp;is_copy_url=0&amp;is_from_webapp=v1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;sender_web_id=6921760597151892998\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@greenpeacevolunteersto\/video\/6954014740909739269?lang=en&amp;is_copy_url=0&amp;is_from_webapp=v1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;sender_web_id=6921760597151892998\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dominique led the charge,<br>posting our first \u2018Eco Hack\u2019<\/a>; a DIY video extolling natural alternatives to<br>chemical cleaning products.<\/p>\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/9FZN1hhbLxM-_c6ilea6uTsTMlttKOjL-TbKq-x8d_h26xhxIVSh_1QYe9omGm2L-TFV_Nc3x8h_s_kaTid-4WfJxR-0e37_gCjuYmJB_cCdkA4VxrpK8Ykz9VuO9m05kcIvF5A\" width=\"624\" height=\"412\"><\/p>\n\n<p>Encouraging others to substitute baking soda and vinegar for traditional<br>toxic cleaners may not seem a revolutionary act. But in the midst of covid,<br>we had to do something to combat the rise of carcinogenic toxins and<\/p>\n\n<p>single-use waste in our communities. By sharing the daily practices we\u2019ve<br>adopted to be more eco-conscious individuals, we could maybe, just<br>maybe, influence others to do the same.<br><br>While @Greenpeace_Canada and @GreenpeaceInternational already have<br>an inspiring social media presence and move huge mountains daily with<br>their online actions, we craved to connect with the Toronto community on a<br>more personal level. After all, what good is getting friends and family to sign<br>Greenpeace petitions if their daily habits directly contribute to the things<br>we\u2019re all fighting against.<br><br><strong>Jane Goodall said it best <\/strong>\u2014<em> \u201cIt depends on changing attitudes. And if we<br>could just get a critical mass of us to start thinking about the consequences<br>of the little choices we make each day, what we buy, what we wear, what<br>we eat, how was it made\u2026 We just have to get it through our heads that<br>what we do as an individual, in the big scheme of things doesn\u2019t make a<br>difference. But what we do collectively, as billions of human beings making<br>the right ethical choices \u2014 that is going to move us in the right direction.\u201d<\/em><br><br>Creating the @GreenpeaceVolunteersTO TikTok and Instagram has allowed<br>us to expand our circle. We\u2019ve connected with allies like<br>@FridaysForFutureTO, led educational discussions in the comments of our<br>videos, and have featured accounts in our stories like @mysuppli and<br>@muuse.ca \u2014 two local companies providing sustainable alternatives to<br>single-use takeout containers &amp; coffee cups.<br><br>The tides of protest are turning, and while the act of posting an IG Reel<br>promoting laundry strips (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@greenpeacevolunteersto\/video\/6959226408010812678?lang=en&amp;is_copy_url=0&amp;is_from_webapp=v1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;sender_web_id=6921760597151892998\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@greenpeacevolunteersto\/video\/6959226408010812678?lang=en&amp;is_copy_url=0&amp;is_from_webapp=v1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;sender_web_id=6921760597151892998\" target=\"_blank\">check Trevor\u2019s stellar vid combatting plastic<br>detergent bottles<\/a>) may pale in comparison to the boots-on-the-ground work<br>of our mentors (<em>cough<\/em> Jane Goodall), there is no debating that an eco<br>message gone viral has the potential to spark real lasting change.<br><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/4wH878t78bw\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/4wH878t78bw\" target=\"_blank\">Remember the turtle with a straw up its nose<\/a>? I certainly do. The footage<br>was powerful, and marine biologist Christine Figgener knew it could be<br>impactful if she shared it on social media. The result? <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/press-release\/3423\/reactive-starbucks-to-remove-fossil-fuel-derived-plastic-straws-globally-debut-new-lids-in-vancouver-seattle-2\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/press-release\/3423\/reactive-starbucks-to-remove-fossil-fuel-derived-plastic-straws-globally-debut-new-lids-in-vancouver-seattle-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">Starbucks said<br>goodbye to plastic straws in 2020<\/a>. A major feat, but alas a small step in the<br>shift towards more conscious consuming.<br><br>Our follower count has been slow, but our commitment to sharing knowledge<br>remains strong. In its smallest successes, developing this volunteer<br>platform has certainly made a greener girl out of me.
