People power defeats proposed GNL Quebec gas plant"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Legault backs down in the face of public pressure and rejects GNL Quebec project.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>After <a href=\"https:\/\/350.org\/energyeast-win\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">defeating the Energy East pipeline<\/a> in 2017 and sending the company behind <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/press-release\/49101\/goldboro-lng-fails-to-secure-investor-by-june-30th-deadline-federal-government-ignores-request-for-nearly-1-billion-in-loans-or-grants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Goldboro LNG back to the drawing board earlier this month<\/a>, Quebec premier&#8217;s Legault&#8217;s announcement that <strong>the GNL Quebec plant will not go ahead is another death knell for the fossil fuel industry. The era of polluting and destructive energy is over.<\/strong> It is high time to turn the page, stop extracting fossil fuels, take concrete action for a just and green transition.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-cta\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/greenpeace.canada\/posts\/10158960467084961\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SHARE ON FACEBOOK<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-cta\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GreenpeaceCA\/status\/1417940271241826307\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SHARE ON TWITTER<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>This decisive victory is collective!<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ici.radio-canada.ca\/nouvelle\/1014576\/opposition-projet-gnl-quebec-grande-anse-saguenay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The first protest against the project <\/a>was organized by Innu land and water protectors in 2017. Following their lead, hundreds of events have taken place across Quebec bringing together hundreds of thousands of people of all ages and all walks of life behind a common demand: &#8220;We deserve better!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p><strong><strong>Along the way there have been many exciting moments!&nbsp;<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized caption-alignment-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2021\/07\/302873ac-untitled-design-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"Overview of some of the mobilisations against GNL Quebec\" class=\"wp-image-49342\" width=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2021\/07\/302873ac-untitled-design-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2021\/07\/302873ac-untitled-design-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2021\/07\/302873ac-untitled-design-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2021\/07\/302873ac-untitled-design-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2021\/07\/302873ac-untitled-design-340x340.png 340w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2021\/07\/302873ac-untitled-design.png 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p><strong><strong>Some of the highlights:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/press-release\/46568\/no-to-gnl-quebec-banners-blossom-across-the-province-in-rejection-of-the-project\/\" target=\"_blank\">More than 120,000 people <\/a>signed a petition, called or wrote to the government to express their opposition ;<\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lapresse.ca\/actualites\/environnement\/2021-03-09\/actions-dans-six-villes-du-quebec\/des-groupes-appellent-au-rejet-de-gnl-quebec.php\" target=\"_blank\">Dozens of student associations<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.collectif-scientifique-gaz-de-schiste.com\/accueil\/images\/BAPE_M%C3%A9moire_Collectif_26_octobre_Version_finale_compressed.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">hundreds of health professionals, scientists<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/fr\/communique-de-presse\/47015\/la-societe-civile-et-les-partis-dopposition-uni%C2%B7es-contre-gnl-gazoduq\/\" target=\"_blank\">economists, civil society groups<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/pmn\/news-pmn\/canada-news-pmn\/three-innu-first-nations-say-they-are-ready-to-take-measures-to-stop-quebec-pipeline\" target=\"_blank\">Indigenous communities<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/fr\/communique-de-presse\/46756\/tous-les-partis-sauf-la-caq-sopposent-a-gnl-gazoduq\/\" target=\"_blank\">opposition parties<\/a> came together to prevent the gas plant from being built ;<\/li><li>With more than 2500 submissions, there was record participation in the public consultations held by the Bureau d&#8217;audiences publiques en environnement (BAPE &#8211; Bureau for public hearings on the environment). <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/press-release\/44494\/bape-on-gnl-quebec-historic-participation-exposes-the-flaws-of-an-outdated-project\/\" target=\"_blank\">More than 90% were opposed to the project<\/a>. Thankfully, the BAPE followed through with a devastating report for the project ;<\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/press-release\/46568\/no-to-gnl-quebec-banners-blossom-across-the-province-in-rejection-of-the-project\/\" target=\"_blank\">Decentralized actions<\/a> to deploy giant banners across the province ;<\/li><li>And much more.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2021\/07\/30c04f85-bannie\u0300res-contre-gnl-1024x819.jpg\" alt=\"Banner actions against GNL across the province\" class=\"wp-image-49345\" width=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2021\/07\/30c04f85-bannie\u0300res-contre-gnl-1024x819.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2021\/07\/30c04f85-bannie\u0300res-contre-gnl-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2021\/07\/30c04f85-bannie\u0300res-contre-gnl-768x614.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2021\/07\/30c04f85-bannie\u0300res-contre-gnl-1536x1229.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2021\/07\/30c04f85-bannie\u0300res-contre-gnl-1708x1366.jpg 1708w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2021\/07\/30c04f85-bannie\u0300res-contre-gnl-425x340.jpg 425w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2021\/07\/30c04f85-bannie\u0300res-contre-gnl.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Local leadership<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>All along the pipeline route and gas export site, local collectives have stood up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/press-release\/41055\/what-gnl-quebec-is-and-why-you-must-say-no-to-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this destructive project<\/a> , notably the Coalition Fjord in the Saguenay, the Collectif Innu Mashk Assi on the Nitassinan, the Mouvement citoyen littOralement inacceptable in Tadoussac, the Comit\u00e9 citoyen carboneutre de la MRC de Maskinong\u00e9 in Mauricie as well as Gazoduq parlons-en, the Coalition anti-pipeline de Rouyn-Noranda and Action bor\u00e9ale in Abitibi.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Targeting funding to stop fossil fuels<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Earlier this year, the International Energy Agency (IEA) stated in its <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/net-zero-by-2050\" target=\"_blank\">latest roadmap<\/a> that there must be no new investment in new fossil fuel projects, including gas, in order to achieve &#8220;carbon neutrality&#8221; by 2050. In a context of increased public demand for climate action, governments, investors and public institutions are increasingly turning their backs on coal and gas. In the case of GNL Quebec, the withdrawal of major investors in <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.journaldemontreal.com\/2020\/03\/05\/le-projet-de-gnl-quebec-encaisse-un-veritable-coup-de-masse-1\" target=\"_blank\">2020<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.journaldemontreal.com\/2021\/07\/08\/gnl-quebec-largue-par-son-banquier\" target=\"_blank\">2021<\/a> has now been followed by an official refusal from the Quebec government. Despite the industry&#8217;s attempt to pass off fossil gas as a &#8220;transition energy&#8221;, the tides are turning and the end of GNL Quebec compounds the global trend.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Thank you to each and every one of you who has supported and participated in this campaign. <\/strong>You signed petitions, you donated to support our work, you challenged Legault and his cabinet by email, phone and social media &#8211; and much more. Your actions paid off.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Let&#8217;s take time to celebrate! <\/strong>It&#8217;s not every day that we win such a big environmental battle.
