And our government is pretending that the escalating crisis does not even exist.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Amazon destruction is out of control<\/strong>. Over the past year, a whopping 8793 km<sup>2<\/sup> of rainforest was deforested in Brazil\u2019s Amazon.<a class=\"reference\" href=\"#ref-3\">[3]<\/a> Just how much land is this? Imagine cutting a 1-km wide path from Halifax all the way to Vancouver \u2014 and then back again.<\/p>\n\n<p>Now the Amazon \u201cburning season\u201d is getting started. This is the peak time when landgrabbers and cattle ranchers intentionally set fires to clear even more land for industrial agriculture. Last week the national Indigenous organization APIB filed a request with the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate Bolsonaro for crimes against humanity and genocide.<a class=\"reference\" href=\"#ref-9\">[9]<\/a> Next week Indigenous peoples will converge in Brasilia for a week of protests. The last time they gathered, they were met with police violence.<a class=\"reference\" href=\"#ref-10\">[10]<\/a><\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-cta\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link\" href=\"mailto:?subject=Join me in taking action \u2013 because losing the Amazon isn\u2019t an option&amp;body=The Amazon rainforest is at a tipping point \u2014 and this year\u2019s fires may be the worst yet. The trade deal would increase imports into Canada of products linked to this destruction \u2014 including as much as $1.8 billion in meat products each year.<a class=\"reference\" href=\"#ref-11\">[11]<\/a><\/p>\n\n<p>Three opposition parties \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/press-release\/45723\/bloc-quebecois-becomes-3rd-opposition-party-with-position-against-canada-mercosur-free-trade-deal-and-amazon-deforestation-greenpeace-response\/\">the NDP, Bloc Quebecois and Green Party \u2014 have taken a position against signing this deal<\/a> under the current circumstances. <strong>But the current Liberal government is once again choosing corporate interests and business as usual in the face of a catastrophic ecological crisis.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>The Amazon is at a tipping point \u2014 and so is our climate. But already more than 50,000 Canadians have already signed onto this campaign, and together we are strong. And we will keep fighting until we win.
