But the pledge to halt and reverse deforestation by 2030, <a href=\"https:\/\/ukcop26.org\/glasgow-leaders-declaration-on-forests-and-land-use\/\">signed by over 140 heads of state<\/a>, looks set to go down as the biggest flop of the conference.<\/p>\n\n<p>Because despite backslapping by assembled dignitaries, the pledge effectively greenlights another decade of global deforestation &#8211; a huge cause of climate change, loss of biodiversity and displacement of Indigenous Peoples.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Off to a shaky start<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>The previous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.undp.org\/content\/dam\/undp\/library\/Environment%20and%20Energy\/Forests\/New%20York%20Declaration%20on%20Forests_DAA.pdf\"><em>New York Forest Declaration<\/em><\/a> of 2014 was also a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2021\/10\/12\/countries-failing-protect-forests-7-years-new-york-declaration\/\">total failure<\/a>, but some of us hoped this time would at least be a little better. From July 29th to 31st, 2021, flights were made over points with Deter (Real Time Deforestation Detection System) and Prodes (Brazilian Amazon Satellite Monitoring Project) warnings, besides heat spots notified by Inpe (National Institute for Space Research), in the states of Amazonas, Rond\u00f4nia, Mato Grosso and Par\u00e1.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-cta\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link\" href=\"https:\/\/act.greenpeace.ca\/en-ca\/amazon-mercosur-trade-deal\">  SIGN THE PETITION TO END THE CANADA-MERCOSUR FREE TRADE DEAL  <\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<p><strong>Saying one thing, doing another<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Many people were concerned that the COP declaration on ending deforestation would end up being a bunch of empty promises. Unfortunately it seems like the Canadian government is a case in point, quickly signing the pledge but quietly continuing to pursue a trade deal in the very commodities (livestock) driving Amazon rainforest destruction.<\/p>\n\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2021\/11\/6794a8e2-mercosur-atip-fall-2021.pdf\">Greenpeace uncovered<\/a> this Fall, the government still intends to resume formal negotiations on a <em>Canada-Mercosur Free Trade Agreement<\/em> with Brazil, which would see meat imports (the leading cause of deforestation) rise by a massive $1.8 billion every year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>In other words, instead of condemning the rising murders of Indigenous land defenders and the urgent need to prevent the Amazon from going past the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/investigates\/special-report\/climate-un-amazon-tipping-point\/\">point of no return<\/a>,\u201d our government is doing a deal in rainforest destruction for cheap meat.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2021\/11\/bbca3447-cows-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-50996\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2021\/11\/bbca3447-cows-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2021\/11\/bbca3447-cows-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2021\/11\/bbca3447-cows-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2021\/11\/bbca3447-cows-510x340.jpg 510w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2021\/11\/bbca3447-cows.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Cattle in a ranching area, next to a recently deforested and burnt area, in Candeias do Jamari, Rond\u00f4nia state.<br>The Amazon is still covered in smoke and torn by criminal and unrestrained destruction, according to overflights produced by the Amazon in Flames Alliance, organized by Amazon Watch, Greenpeace Brazil and the Brazilian Climate Observatory. The expedition took place between September 13th and 17th, in the cities of Porto Velho (Rond\u00f4nia state) and L\u00e1brea (southern Amazonas state).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p><strong>Deforestation data a wake up call<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>If the government won\u2019t listen to the over <a href=\"https:\/\/act.greenpeace.ca\/en-ca\/amazon-mercosur-trade-deal\">55,000 Canadians<\/a>, human rights activists, farmers, physicians and political parties opposing this dirty deal, then maybe they\u2019ll listen to the facts.<\/p>\n\n<p>Since President Bolsonaro came to power, deforestation rates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/50896\/amazon-deforestation-rate-highest-since-2006\/\">have increased a staggering&nbsp; 52.9%<\/a>, in large part driven by deforestation for industrial meat that would be exported to Canada <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/feds-abandon-trade-talks-brazil-1.5713806\">in huge volumes if the deal goes ahead<\/a>. Just this past October an area of 796 km<sup>2<\/sup> was deforested<em>, <\/em>making it the second worst October in historical records.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>For his entire 3-year rule, the Bolsonaro administration has proposed a series of bills that threaten Indigenous rights and&nbsp; give the green light for further rainforest destruction.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Holding Justin Trudeau accountable<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Commitments matter. By committing to end deforestation in public, Justin Trudeau now has to do the actual work to make it a reality. That\u2019s how leadership works.<\/p>\n\n<p>The Prime Minister himself reminded us this summer that \u201cwe are only as healthy as our environment\u201d. I\u2019d like to remind him that includes the Amazon rainforest, a vast, biologically and culturally diverse landscape storing enormous amounts of carbon and freshwater.<\/p>\n\n<p>You can remind him too by signing <a href=\"https:\/\/act.greenpeace.ca\/en-ca\/amazon-mercosur-trade-deal\">our petition to Minister of Foreign Affairs M\u00e9lanie Joly<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>The first step towards ending deforestation globally is ending this trade deal in Amazon destruction.
