Although these caribou have been in decline for decades, the science is clear on what needs to be done. The <strong>biggest threat<\/strong> to boreal caribou is <strong>industry destroying their habitat<\/strong>,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the <strong>most important measure<\/strong> to keep them from extinction is <strong>protecting the old growth and intact forests<\/strong> they need to survive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"width: 50%; margin: 0 auto;\" align=\"center\"><a class=\"btn btn-primary btn-medium page-header-btn\" href=\"https:\/\/act.gp\/2O9KJyN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sign the petition<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So the task was clear. And years given for provinces to research and rally, consult and create, plan and perfect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The big day finally came&#8230; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Not one province came up with a credible plan to protect caribou.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One year has passed since that day. Has the situation improved since then? Let\u2019s look to some \u201chighlights\u201d from the past year: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After giving the <strong>go-ahead for industry to destroy more<\/strong>, and more, and more of the Val-d\u2019Or caribou herd\u2019s forest, the <strong>Government of Quebec announced it would be <\/strong><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/montreal\/efforts-to-save-woodland-caribou-in-northern-quebec-too-costly-says-province-1.4569479\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">too expensive to save <\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>them<\/strong> and was abandoning them to their fate. (First Nations including Lac Simon Anishinabe Nation <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadiangeographic.ca\/article\/quebec-first-nations-step-help-save-val-dor-caribou-herd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stepped in to their rescue<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>.<\/strong>)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ontario government gifted industry another <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/sci-tech\/industry-exemptions-to-ontario-wildlife-laws-put-caribou-at-risk-critics-say-1.3795460\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">two years of blanket exemptions to meeting endangered species laws<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The B.C. government greenlighted <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clearwatertimes.com\/news\/wilderness-group-finds-clearcut-logging-in-critical-habitat-of-at-risk-southern-mountain-caribou\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">numerous clearcuts in known critical habitat for caribou<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>,<\/strong> while in parallel a number of mountain caribou herds (sibling to boreal caribou) were found to be <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/mountain-caribou-bc-1.4619964\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">functionally extinct<\/a>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The situation is urgent. No provincial government has yet taken meaningful action to actually protect boreal caribou from extinction. A number of <strong>First Nations have stepped up<\/strong> and taken leadership roles in trying to <\/span><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fortnelsonfirstnation.org\/news.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">protect the caribou<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in their territory. But the unchecked destruction of caribou\u2019s habitat continues from coast to coast. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s time now for leadership at a national level. Leadership that the Federal Commissioner of the Environment pointed out has been <\/span><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oag-bvg.gc.ca\/internet\/English\/parl_cesd_201804_03_e_42994.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sorely absent thus far<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Join us now in calling on the Federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Catherine McKenna, to step in and protect the caribou where the provinces have failed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The movement of people calling for change is growing. Herds have been declining across the country at an alarming rate and may soon become extinct in some areas.
