Wouldn\u2019t it be nice if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/53560\/coke-vs-pepsi-who-will-lead-refill-and-reuse-future\/\">Coca-Cola and Pepsi also joined this challenge<\/a> (wink wink)?<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">We can make a difference. But the entire system needs changing.<\/h3>\n\n<p>Those who have previously participated in Plastic Free July, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plasticfreejuly.org\/about-us\/\">which has been running since 2011<\/a>, know there are some simple actions many of us can take to reduce our personal plastic footprint. Engaging in and supporting reuse, refill, and waste avoiding initiatives can be a great way to send a signal to companies and governments that people want and support an alternative to our throwaway plastic system. But we aren\u2019t responsible for the billions of single-use plastic items pumped into the market each week, and many people don\u2019t have access to alternatives. Throwaway plastic is virtually everywhere as we go about our lives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>That is why this Plastic Free July we\u2019re demanding that the corporations that produce most of our goods packaged in plastic switch to systems of reuse &amp; refill. Companies like Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Nestl\u00e9, and Unilever have been among <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakfreefromplastic.org\/2021\/10\/25\/the-coca-cola-company-and-pepsico-named-top-plastic-polluters-for-the-fourth-year-in-a-row\/\">the worst plastic polluters in the Break Free from Plastic movement\u2019s global brand audits<\/a> four years in a row. In addition to fueling the plastic waste and pollution crisis, the almost 7 million metric tonnes of plastic could result in 34,027,105 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions across its whole lifecycle, contributing to the climate crisis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Last year alone, Coca-Cola produced a mind-boggling 125 billion plastic bottles, and given that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/11871\/the-ocean-plastic-crisis\/\">only 9% of plastic ever produced has actually been recycled<\/a> we know that the majority of those bottles will likely be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/52154\/africa-waste-colonialism-plastic-treaty\/\">incinerated, dumped into landfills, or wind up polluting our oceans and communities<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/07\/d8caffb9-gp0stqsr4_.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-53692\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/07\/d8caffb9-gp0stqsr4_.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/07\/d8caffb9-gp0stqsr4_-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/07\/d8caffb9-gp0stqsr4_-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/07\/d8caffb9-gp0stqsr4_-510x340.jpg 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption>Plastic Coca-Cola bottles found on a beach in Scotland. \u00a9 Will Rose \/ Greenpeace<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>In February, Coca-Cola became the first Big Brand to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/52245\/greenpeace-plastics-coca-cola-reusable-target-2030\/\">announce a commitment to make at least 25% of their packaging reusable or refillable by 2030<\/a>. While this announcement was a step in the right direction, the company must go much further to actually reduce plastic use and prevent continued production of&nbsp; waste and pollution.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>PepsiCo, Nestl\u00e9 and Unilever, which currently have negligible amounts of reuse and refill in their packaging portfolios, have not made any public commitments to increase their use of those systems.<\/p>\n\n<p>But, PepsiCo has indicated its intention to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asyousow.org\/press-releases\/2022\/3\/16\/pepsi-reduce-single-use-packaging\">set a refill and reuse goal<\/a> by the end of 2022. Now is our opportunity to remind PepsiCo that it can and must do better than its long-time rival on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/47146\/plastic-is-a-climate-health-and-social-justice-issue\/\">an issue that impacts billions of people around the world<\/a>.
