Vancouver, for instance, is expected to spend $1 billion to address rising sea levels with measures that could include sea wall repairs. By voting to hold Big Oil accountable for damages, the city has taken a step toward protecting taxpayers from paying for these kinds of climate costs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Similar lawsuits have been filed in Germany, Switzerland, and the United States as part of a growing movement for climate accountability, fuelled by people power! <\/strong>In Canada,<strong> <\/strong>West Coast Environmental Law launched the \u201cSue Big Oil\u201d campaign, as Greenpeace supporters made deputations at the Vancouver city council and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/act.greenpeace.ca\/en-ca\/make-polluter-pay?_ga=2.66794734.1559619628.1661180090-369881314.1656943953\" target=\"_blank\">petitioned<\/a> local governments to explore legal action against big polluters. <strong>The tide is turning against the fossil fuel industry, and they should not expect to continue to profit at our expense.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">Disposable cups restricted in Taipei stores<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/08\/7017d8ef-taiwan1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-54216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/08\/7017d8ef-taiwan1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/08\/7017d8ef-taiwan1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/08\/7017d8ef-taiwan1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/08\/7017d8ef-taiwan1-510x340.jpg 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption><em>Greenpeace East Asia (Taipei) has advocated for the adoption of reuse and refill services for years. In 2021, Greenpeace and the Environmental Protection Bureau successfully recruited 22 beverage shops to provide rental cup service in Taichung.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Starting in December, <strong>Taipei will <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/focustaiwan.tw\/society\/202208070008#:~:text=The%20implementation%20of%20the%20restriction,by%202024%20at%20the%20latest.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>restrict the use of single-use plastic cups<\/strong><\/a><strong> in businesses across the city.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the city\u2019s Department of Environmental Protection, 2,206 chain and non-chain beverage stores in Taipei will stop using disposable plastic cups. The move is expected to <strong>reduce the use of more than 76 million single-use plastic cups<\/strong> next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Greenpeace has been campaigning for retailers in Taiwan to phase out single-use plastics for years. <strong>While we celebrate this victory, we will continue to push for a more complete transition toward reusable solutions, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/act.greenpeace.ca\/en-ca\/national-reuse-strategy&amp;sa=D&amp;source=docs&amp;ust=1661974623908730&amp;usg=AOvVaw2OuPT_lyxWr_hMBKmpnzdW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">including here in Canada<\/a>!<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">Shell advertisement ruled misleading<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/08\/d93daf9e-shell-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-54220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/08\/d93daf9e-shell-1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/08\/d93daf9e-shell-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/08\/d93daf9e-shell-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/08\/d93daf9e-shell-1-510x340.jpg 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption><em>In October 2021, Greenpeace Netherlands activists blocked the entrance to Shell\u2019s oil refinery, as over 20 organizations launched a petition calling for a law to ban fossil fuel advertising and sponsorship in the European Union.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Does this headline sound familiar? Well, it is! <strong>This is the<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-06-30\/shell-is-called-out-again-for-misleading-climate-ads-in-holland#:~:text=The%20Netherlands'%20advertising%20watchdog%20ruled,must%20be%20pulled%20from%20circulation.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong> fourth time<\/strong><\/a><strong> this year that<\/strong> <strong>the Netherlands\u2019 advertising watchdog has ruled an ad campaign by the oil company Shell to be misleading.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ad suggested that customers could pay more to neutralize their emissions. In response, Greenpeace Netherlands and its partner, Reclame Fossielvrij (\u201cAdvertising Fossil Free\u201d), filed a complaint to the Dutch advertisement watchdog. Following an investigation, the body decided that the oil giant had failed to prove that it can offset the harm caused by its products.&nbsp;[1] <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>These rulings could set precedents for countries with similar advertising codes.<\/strong> Just last November, Greenpeace Canada filed a complaint with the Competition Bureau, challenging Shell Canada\u2019s claims about forest-based offsets. <strong>Every case we file exposes greenwashing and keeps Big Oil accountable for its role in the climate crisis!<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">Bottom trawling banned in Swedish marine protected areas<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/08\/77c30c09-sweden_-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-54223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/08\/77c30c09-sweden_-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/08\/77c30c09-sweden_-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/08\/77c30c09-sweden_-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/08\/77c30c09-sweden_-510x340.jpg 510w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/08\/77c30c09-sweden_.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption><em>A Greenpeace diving expedition in August 2022 found one of the boulders Greenpeace placed on the Swedish seabed in 2009 with plenty of marine life thriving on and around it!<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Great news coming in from Sweden: <strong>bottom trawling has been banned in marine protected areas!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2009, Greenpeace Sweden placed over 200 boulders on the seabed around two marine protected areas. These areas are home to porpoises and one of Sweden&#8217;s rarest shark species, which Greenpeace aimed to protect from bottom trawling. Greenpeace also submitted a formal complaint to the European Commission about the lack of protection in these Swedish areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>And our hard work has paid off: as of last month, there is a total ban on bottom trawling in all of the protected areas and a complete fishing ban in half of them! <\/strong>These bans are among the strongest protections in place within the network of protected areas in Europe. The same process has now created protected areas in Danish waters as well, and we hope to see them implemented in more areas soon!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">CAMPAIGN UPDATE<\/h2>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">Greenpeace seizes 30km of industrial fishing gear in the North Atlantic<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/08\/cd743d3c-gp1sy8kg_-1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-54227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/08\/cd743d3c-gp1sy8kg_-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/08\/cd743d3c-gp1sy8kg_-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/08\/cd743d3c-gp1sy8kg_-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/08\/cd743d3c-gp1sy8kg_-1-453x340.jpg 453w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-canada-stateless\/2022\/08\/cd743d3c-gp1sy8kg_-1.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption><em>Greenpeace UK and Greenpeace Espa\u00f1a activists free a shark from a longline.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A new report from Greenpeace, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/PTO-Shark-Trade-Report-Final-Web.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>Hooked on Sharks<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, exposes the industrial-scale fishing operation impacting shark populations in the North Atlantic Ocean. <strong>The investigation found that fishing vessels from the EU are casting longlines in shark breeding grounds.<\/strong> Activists aboard the <em>Arctic Sunrise <\/em>intervened and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/54930\/greenpeace-seizes-30km-of-industrial-fishing-gear-in-north-atlantic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">confiscated <\/a>gear from two industrial longline fishing vessels on July 15. They released a blue shark, seven swordfish, and other marine life caught on the lines. They also made Greenpeace-themed bracelets, which they sold to their school community.
