As the host country, Canada has a responsibility to lead by example and mobilize world leaders to commit to nature protection.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"is-style-default wp-block-heading\">Prioritizing Indigenous peoples and turning nature protection pledges into reality<\/h2>\n\n<p>That\u2019s why we\u2019ve been campaigning for a federal Nature &amp; Biodiversity Act that would lay out a policy roadmap to turn <strong>nature protection pledges into reality. <\/strong>But to make an Act like this happen, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/act.greenpeace.ca\/en-ca\/protect-biodiversity?utm_campaign=naturefood-biodiver[\u2026]eb&amp;utm_term=en-20221208-sign-link&amp;utm_content=CBD.launchblog\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/act.greenpeace.ca\/en-ca\/protect-biodiversity?utm_campaign=naturefood-biodiver[\u2026]eb&amp;utm_term=en-20221208-sign-link&amp;utm_content=CBD.launchblog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">we need thousands of Canadians speaking up to support it.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-16018d1d wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button has-custom-width wp-block-button__width-50 is-style-cta\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/act.greenpeace.ca\/en-ca\/protect-biodiversity?utm_campaign=naturefood-biodiver[\u2026]eb&amp;utm_term=en-20221208-sign-link&amp;utm_content=CBD.launchblog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Advocate for a strong Biodiversity Act<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>I\u2019ll be attending COP15 negotiations over the next two weeks alongside Indigenous representatives from the Amazon, the Congo Basin, West Papua, and Northern Qu\u00e9bec. Together we\u2019ll be campaigning for a rights-based approach to nature protection, urging governments to <strong>prioritize Indigenous peoples and frontline communities over corporate profits and false solutions.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What&#8217;s at stake<\/h2>\n\n<p>The commitments made at COP15 will determine the protections given to nature until 2030. To say the stakes are high is an understatement\u2014<strong>we\u2019re in the midst of a sixth mass extinction event, <\/strong>with 1 million species at risk of extinction worldwide and earth\u2019s natural systems being <strong>pushed to the brink of irreversible tipping points. <\/strong>[1]<br><br>It can feel like an uphill battle, but I know I am not alone because of our supporters. Our new poll shows that a majority of people in Canada are genuinely worried about the nature crisis and think our federal government is the one that needs to tackle it. [2] In theory, Canada <em>loves<\/em> a nature protection pledge, but our government has <strong>missed virtually every biodiversity target it has ever set for itself. <\/strong>Most recently, they failed to achieve their target of protecting 17% of land by 2020; it\u2019s already 2022 <strong>they\u2019ve protected just over 13%<\/strong>. [3]<\/p>\n\n<p>Please join our campaign calling on the federal government to pass a Nature &amp; Biodiversity Act.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Thank you for your time and energy.
